Photos by Steve Kelley and Chetan S..
This past July some NYPD officers defended a civilian's right to photograph when he was harassed by another civilian for snapping shots in the subway system. This was a surprising change, to say the least, in the force's previous attitude towards shutterbugs — but since it came after this department-wide memo was sent out, it showed promise for the future.
Now Animal points to a new incident, however, where photographer Steve Kelley and his friend were detained after snapping some shots during a "photo walk" in Brooklyn Heights. Kelley says his buddy Chetan was taking a photo of this door, which was allegedly described by some of New York's Finest as a so-called “sensitive subject." Six officers showed up and took the two in for questioning, where they were even grilled on where they went to school. Hours later they were released.
We've contacted the NYPD to find out if the memo will be going out again!

If I looked like that fat fuck cop with the comedy wig, I wouldn't want any photogs around either.
Well the Photographer does look 'questionable'
I'm surprised the CIA didn't swoop in to have him kidnapped for interrogation.
he looks like those fat cartoon bullies, the guy who stole Stewie's trikey.
I hope he's not taking off his uniform.
hahaha!
holy shit that is a gross beard. but yes, they shouldn't harass photographers.
Interesting. I always thought the cop/pig thing was just a joke.
OMG, JOHN CANDY LIVES!
yeah, well, grow your hipster beard to terrorist lengths and you're bound to get hassled by the cops when you take pictures of MTA doorways.
it doesnt help that he looks like osama bin homeless....just saying
osama bin hipster
And seriously, why does the NYPD let such fat, out of shape porkers stay on the force? Most every cop out there has a belly that would make Big Boy jealous. The military doesn't allow that shit - neither should our city.
He's a sandbag, useful for obvious reasons.
Leave the guy alone. He only has a triple chin. He needs it to make up for the lack of a neck.
is that a comic strip? yeah, i thought so.
well based on the photo the photographer looks like a middle east man maybe that's why he is so suspicious and invited to the precint...

I'm sure the beard influenced the police officers, but beard or no beard, the photographer was not breaking any law. Have we reached the point of detaining people just because of their appearance?
The photographer was not breaking any law. You have to keep that in mind. You can't haul someone in for looking like they come from the Middle East or because they have a long beard.
he looks more like the guy from TV on the Radio than a guy who just got off a plane from saudi arabia.
That door is the emergency exit for the 2/3 line. was stuck on a 2 during the 2003 blackout under the river and was walked out on the tracks and up out of that door (instead of having to trek to Clark...) bs that the cops gave them crap, it's still being taken from a public sidewalk so screw them! i can image a LOT more photos being taken of that door as soon as the Brooklyn Bridge Park comes online...
Jen,
When posting items like this could you please include addresses, either email or physical, where people can send complaints? The only way that things like this get changed (i.e. memos sent out, or PRAISE JEEBUS adequate training)is if people complain to the NYPD or write their city council members.
With the traffic that this site generates it could actually lead them to... I don't know, follow the law!
