"Most Wanted" Serial Subway Robbery Suspect Nabbed In N.C.

2009_11_rashwill.jpg A man suspected in 14 subway robberies since January was arrested yesterday in North Carolina. Rasheem Williams, 37, who had been one of the NYPD's most wanted criminals, was apprehended, as were two other fugitives wanted by the cops, in Rocky Mount, N.C.

In the subway robberies, the Daily News explains that the suspect would "[brandish] a knife or [simulate] a firearm when he approached his victims, most of whom were women," and then "demand that his victims fork over their valuables and PIN numbers for their bank cards." The incidents took place in upper Manhattan, the Bronx and Brooklyn.

Only one victim was injured: Per the Post, he "allegedly punched a 40-year-old woman in the face when she wouldn't give up her purse as she rode the A train near the 207th Street station." The suspect also earned the nickname the "Red Sox bandit" because he wore a Red Sox hat.
