Can The Giants Get Back On Track?

2009_11_eli.jpg The last time the Chargers came to New York the result was the infamous “Snowball Game”. While there is no snow in the forecast, Giants fans are in an ugly mood, thanks to a three-game losing streak. In many ways this team is facing its first real crisis point since Week 15 in 2007 when they had to beat the Bills to make the playoffs.

Tom Coughlin recognizes this and hoping to instill a sense of urgency in his team he has sent the message that “it’s a one-game season for us”. Coughlin has made a change in the secondary sending C.C. Brown (the initials stand for “Can’t Cover”) to the bench and inserting Aaron Rouse. Rouse was picked up on waivers earlier this season from Green Bay, so it’s tough to say how much of an upgrade he might be, but he really can’t be worse. In addition, the Giants will get Michael Boley and Chris Canty back for this game, which should help the pass rush immensely.

This game already had enough drama, but don’t forget that the Giants originally drafted Philip Rivers, the Chargers quarterback, before making him part of the Eli Manning trade. Rivers hasn’t had a chance to play the Giants on the field since then and he will certainly be motivated to prove to New York that they made a huge mistake.

Expect the Giants to simplify some things on offense, getting the ball into Brandon Jacobs’ hands more often and eliminating some of the deep throws by Eli. That combined with a better defensive effort should be enough. Coughlin & Co will get the win and head into their bye week 6-3.
