Paterson Rolls Out Ads For 2010 Election

2009_11_paterad.jpg Embattled by the state's economy and some of his (and his staff's) own missteps, Governor Paterson is considered an underdog to run for governor next year. But here he is, releasing television ads touting his case. The NY Times says of the pair of ads, "The two ads, each 30 seconds long, highlight his biography and address criticism Mr. Paterson has faced from labor unions and business interests over his proposed cuts to the state budget. Both directly confront what polls say is Mr. Paterson’s central political problem: widespread public skepticism that he has the ability to lead the state effectively."

One ad, "Some Say," features Paterson speaking about his rocky, unpopular tenure so far, "It might have been easier if all I thought about was running for governor. But I think it’s more important to do what’s right for the people of New York," while the other ad, "When," highlights Paterson's blindness, his education, and how he's learning from mistakes. (Video for both ads are below; you can read the scripts here.)

Politico's Ben Smith writes, "The campaign is a last-ditch effort to save his political skin, though it's unclear if he'll have the money behind it to make a real dent, which is how a political death spiral works," but then updates with this: "Paterson campaign manager Richie Fife doesn't like my characterization: 'It's not last ditch! it's launching the campaign,' he said... It is, he said, a 'substantial and extended buy.'"

Can there still be a Democratic primary even if Paterson is running? Or has he ruined the chances of having a Democrat governor in New York for the next four years by running and making it impossible for anyone else? Is there any precedent for a member of someone's party challenging an incumbent for his seat?

Anyone can run against him -- and will. Cuomo's going to.

I suspect they'll try to settle on a candidate in backroom negotiations. It's hard, because Paterson, as Governor, is sort of head of NY State Democratic Party. So if other Dems don't want him to run, they'll need to pressure him to step down.

The second one is very good -- well written and concise.

admitting imperfection. how decidedly un-politicianlike.

i still think this guy got slayed in the media because:
1. he was unprepared to be cast into this incredibly difficult situation--the vacuum caused by the ungraceful spitz exit.
2. he will play hardball with established politicos and other vested interests even knowing that he has the weaker hand, because "what the hell, i've got nothing to lose."
3. people can't grow up and get over his visual impairment with their medieval perception that it is a marker of his intelligence.

I actually think Paterson's done a pretty good job.
He started off clean and strong, but the media has seriously been ripping him apart for no apparent reason. Besides pissing a lot of special interests off.

The only other person out there who's actually got a track record is Cuomo though. But he's obviously on that career tract laid out for him.
