Charles Barron May Run For Council Speaker

2009_11_cbarron.jpg According to Runnin' Scared, City Councilman Charles Barron is considering challenging Christine Quinn to be Speaker, saying, "I would be an excellent speaker...We need someone to be a check on the Mayor, not a deputy mayor." He noted that the Speaker and Council chairs for the finance and land committees are white, so if a non-white Council member doesn't throw her or his hat into the ring against Quinn, he will. He added, "You only need 26 votes. There's an African American leader in the Bronx, 8 council votes in the Bronx, an African American county leader, with 10 council votes in Manhattan. And in Brooklyn a lot of us are. So even if you don't have all of those on board, they could pick the next speaker. I think we could do it if we could stick together."

what is this "we" he is yapping about? run on your own merits as an individual and don't bring race into it.

So he expects to get votes just because of his race? What about merit? Christine Quinn has plenty.

Nice the way this asshole counts his votes, huh? Like it's all about race.

if he get's in, that would really shake things up
but this is still a very mayoral city.
as shown by backroom deals and no bid contracts.
It would be very interesting. More dirty laundry to come.

It would be nice to live in a place where qualifications are the determining factor in politics, rather than phenotype. People in America are WAY too hung up on race.

Oh look, Barron is playing racial politics again. *yawn*

I guess he has to, though, since that's really his only selling point.

Quinn should be speaker, she rubber stamps whatever the mayor wants since she is beholden to him. He made the slush fund investigation go away. She should have gone to jai

John McWhorter, an author of several books that challenge the victim mindset in the black community, once said that anytime he did speeches at universities and faced the inevitable wrath of the crowd afterward, it was always the lighter-skinned blacks who were the loudest, most angry, etc. out of what he perceived to be an insecurity over the lightness of their skin. (And yes, McWhorter is black.) I think Barron is a shining example of McWhorter's theory.

Didn't Barron plan to run for Brooklyn borough president at one point?

I can't stand Quinn - she is horrendous, but OMG, please NO.

quinn has her work cut out for her if she wants to return as speaker. the entire council saw who was in her pocket.
how she can show her face there is quite telling. she's ineffective and more so now, you can tell she's just going through the motions.

I blame my own lack of imagination for not imagining a speaker worse than Christine Quinn. Thank you, Gothamist, for correcting that.

Seriously. I thought it couldn't get worse than Quinn, but I'd obviously just forgotten about Barron.

BARRON IS NO FRIEND TO THE NY Jewish community.
He has a rat's ass of winning anything but his little
Brooklyn gig and to follow Sharpton's shadow.
To late, same if a white Supremicist was running, too late.
Maybe in 1968 with his Dashiki, not now.

Charles Barron makes it a habit of announcing his intentions of running for certain positions such as Mayor, Gov, and never acts on the project. He is just a Big Mouth.
