Facebook Shuts Down Pregnant Dancer's Account Over Photo

110409curring.jpg Cherry Currin, a member of the The Dazzle Dancers who goes by the stage-name Cherry Dazzle, has had trouble with Facebook in the past over risque photos; she's previously received warnings about a photo of herself backflipping out of the vagina of a giant female statue, and then again for an image of her breasts covered in flame-shaped pasties. But it wasn't until Cherry got pregnant that Facebook went nuclear and canceled her account!

The termination came after Currin uploaded a photo (seen here) of her pregnant body, dressed only in a thong, gold pasties, and glitter, as her Facebook profile picture. She wasn't even technically naked, but that didn't matter to the site's administrators, who have previously sparked controversy by yanking photos of breast-feeding mothers from profile pages.

So why does Facebook hate the pregnant female form? That's what Currin wants to know; she tells the NY Press, "I think people are terrified of the vagina or something. It's the human body! We all have one.People are so scared of bodies in this country. It's insane. I think that why we have so many health problems." Agreed—and the Health Department really needs to start encouraging G-strings and pasties as part of its Take Care NY initiative.

who fucking cares... facebook is for nerds

Unless women who aren't pregnant are allowed to use the same kind of photo as their profile pics, there's no evidence that this happened because she is pregnant in her photo.

And of course, she's previously been warned. Maybe this was just the one that put her over a threshold of the number of warnings a user is given before termination.

Until I start seeing a bunch of profile pics of women "dressed only in a thong, gold pasties, and glitter" I'm not buying that there's anything discriminatory about this.

And so what? Create a new account, big deal.

Well, either that or sue for $10 million.

jayclay, i am wearing pasties which ARE allowed. i am also wearing a bathing suit bottom which is allowed. so it is clearly the fact that i am sexy and pregnant that bothers them.
the previous warning was not for this photo - it was specifically for another photo of a large piece of artwork in a gallery in NYC. they had issues with the artwork but should NOT be able to censure art!
there are hundreds of profile pics of women in pasties and glitter. just check out the burlesque scenesters.
i could create a new account yes, but it would take hours and hours of time that i don't have now that i will soon have a newborn and that's not really the point. it's just disgraceful that they decide what is moral and what isn't. do you know what i'm saying?

I understand this woman is beautiful and wants to show the world her beauty while she has it but come on, is there really a good reason to show naked pictures of your boobs online? If I guy was showing pictures of his dong with tassles most women would report it.

the nipples are NOT naked. there are pasties on them. gold sequin to be specific.

Since when is Facebook the morality police? Instead of going after pregnant ladies why not focus their efforts on something that actually makes an impact- like cyber bullying highschoolers or something. I mean Jesus, how many times have people been arrested for really sketchy stuff and then, oh surprise surprise, they have a facebook account. Facebook needs to come to terms with the fact that they are quickly joining the ranks of myspace.

Prego women are HOT. Facebook is just hating.

Ah. So Facebook can close your account, but you can't?
Right now, all a Facebook member can do is 'deactivate' an account. You cannot close or cancel.

Here's a bigger question: what's that thing to the RIGHT of the pregnant woman's belly?

When I first saw this image, it looked like porn. I assume Facebook's police also had similar thoughts running through their minds.

Personally, having just gone through a pregnancy myself, I don't think the issue here is that Facebook targeted a pregnant woman. This particular photo looks very troublesome at first glance. And if it's a profile photo, anyone can see it in a search for her name if she didn't go nuclear on her privacy settings.

Why can't she take a picture of her face like nearly all of Facebook's 300 million members do? Two warnings weren't enough?

the thing to the RIGHT of my belly is a confetti cannon as am performing at the DUMBO arts festival (coming out of a volcano a la showgirls)
i don't know why you would think it looked like porn considering you were just pregnant yourself - i would think you would instead think beautiful thoughts about your recent belly.
if the photo looked troublesome to FB at first glance, i would hope they look at it more closely and realize it's just a body.
and you're right - i should have gone nuclear on my privacy settings - maybe that would have solved this whole thing.
the warnings were not for this picture - they were unrelated.
and finally why should i take a picture of my face like nearly all of Facebook's 300 million members do? where is the freedom of expression?

Everyone is morality police. You cannot escape it.

"Everyone is morality police"

At least, I know I am. But I can't really help it; I'm just so good at it.

I agree with Tamar. I wasn't sure what I was seeing when I first saw the picture. Whatever the Woman's intentions were for posting this picture of herself, the bottom line is she already had warnings in the past.

It's their sandbox and if she doesn't like the rules go play somewhere else. Why complain? Bu-bye attention whore, don't let the door poke you on the way out.

i did follow their rules. they didn't follow their own rules. that's the deal.

Who cares about Facebook, anyway?

Facebook is for losers. So is Twitter.

- Facebook is being a jerk for canceling her account.
- She is being a jerk for making a big deal out of it.

Offsetting penalties, repeat second down.

what's worse, having a facebook account or commenting on gothamist?

..and somehow I get moderated while Felixthecat2 posts pages of bullshit without even a warning. This is fucked.

There are totally nipples in that picture too, violating Facebook TOS.

no nipples - gold sequin pasties.

well, i'm not showing the baby - i'm showing my belly
