Big Tippin'

jayzb1109.jpg Jay-Z and Beyonce are spreading the wealth. The Daily News reports that the couple "ran up a $1,200 bill at the Upper East Side Italian restaurant Nello's last week" after savoring their Dom Perignon, white truffles and lobster salad. If they liked it so much why didn't they just put a ring on it! (Sorry.) They were so pleased with the service and food, however, that they dropped a $500 tip. That's over 40%! The News calls out another Nello's diner, a Russian billionaire, for being relatively stingy with a 15% tip of $7,328 tip on a $47,221.09 lunch.

500 bucks please. He prob tips his strippers that much for a lap dance. On to the next one.

i have it on good authority that they're very stingy bar patrons.

It was 20% Gratuity for the Russian Dude.
And he wasn't stingy, the waiter didn't do shit. 20 appetizers, a few coffees, a few bottles of wine, a few espressos.

7k is an astronomical tip and way too much. There is a point where percentage of bill becomes irrelevant in tipping. There is no way a 10k bottle of wine deserves a 2k tip.

You know, sometimes its nice to make somebody's day..or month..or year.

Its called being nice.

how you can call a 7,328 tip stingy is beyond me.

fck these celebrties - what does rocks-with fellas Jay-z do for the people of bklyn besides talking about them in his songs while living in manhattan? I'd like to see him donate a few of his 100 millions to build some parks in Bed Stuy. Put his money where his mouth. Man up jigga.

@valeriob No, percentage does not become irrelevant. Besides, if you can afford to drop huge money on a meal, then you can afford to give the appropriate tip. Otherwise, you are a douchebag. Btw, you are a douchebag.

Check your emotions at the door. I want facts.
Do you tip your delivery guy 20%?
If your bill was 100.00 would you give him a 20? If it was 20.00 would you give him a 5? It's relative to the service provided, and that service is pretty much the same, bring you food.
Show me your logic, clown.

I AM OUTRAGED THAT A BILLIONAIRE GAVE A LARGER THAN NECESSARY TIP! WTF, guy, a $7K tip vs. a $5K tip is inconsequential for the Russian billionaire but it means a lot to the server and the back of the house.

Aren't there more important things to be angry about than an extremely wealthy person for tipping more than necessary?

I've been a waiter at a VERY expensive restaurant and I can tell you from experience that when I was serving up a 400 dollar bottle of wine I didn't expect 20% of that. It's true that expensive wine need to be decanted, served in nice shiny crystal and so on and so forth, but most fine dining waiters understand that it doesn't warrant 20%. Nevertheless, people were almost always generous with the tipping....unless they were European...oh lord those people were rude.

valerio's absolutely correct. 20% tip for bringing a bottle to the table is obscene, even if such tip is customary.

i doubt jay-z & his girl can count. 20 or 40%, whatever.

I wonder why you would think that since Jaz Z is known to be one of the smarter fellas in the entertainment industry? Hm, wonder what could make you draw that conclusion...

He does strike me as a rather successful businessman.

And regardless, it's OK -- there's an app for that.

What did they eat for $1,200? Gold? Drank some oil?

Could they order anything more noveau riche, tacky or gauche than Dom Perignon, lobster and truffles.

You can take the boy out of Brooklyn, but you can't take Brooklyn out of the boy.

Easy -- I don't think Saturday workshops on Nello's, manners, and selection were offered in the Marcy projects.

I, for one, applaud their generosity. Who cares what they were eating or how much money they spent? There's nothing scummier than people who order food they can't really afford and then ding the waiter for their gauche behavior. Jay-z and Beyonce are setting a good example. Good for them.

a friend of mine used to work at the Stinking Rose in LA, and Shaq once gave her a rolex as a tip. Jay and Beyonce have some work to do.

I notice you wrote rolex and not Rolex. Was it made in Peru? They do a poor job of keeping time, but those Perurian rolexes (always available on Canal Street, unless NYPD is around) look nice.

I hear they're both very generous.

That's the power of internet media. Making the rest of America care what two rich people ate for lunch. Good work, Perez Carlson.

and it is all because, we have in a very innovative world.

The Internet is becoming the town square for the global village of tomorrow.
