"What If Anthony Ran" Questions Surround 2009 Election

2009_11_weiner.jpg Mayor Bloomberg's narrower-than-expected election win over Comptroller Bill Thompson has left people wondering not only what could have been if Thompson got more support but what might have happened if Rep. Anthony Weiner had run against Bloomberg instead. Politico reports that when Weiner said last night that maybe President Obama should have stumped for Thompson, “Maybe one of those Corzine trips could have been better spent in New York. Who knows?" a White House official fired back, "Maybe Anthony Weiner should have manned-up and run against Michael Bloomberg."

Weiner decided in May not to run for the job, explaining in a Times op-ed that Bloomberg's obscene wealth had something to do with his decision. Today, he's being called a coward, though the Observer's Steve Kornacki offers up some thinking about what could have happened if Weiner ran—maybe he could have won, but it's "not as automatic" as one would think, because, among other reasons, with his campaigning, "he also might have turned off more voters than Thompson ever did."

Weiner said last night, "Look, to some degree, Democrats need to look in the mirror. There are a lot of Democrats who voted to overturn term limits. There are a lot of Democrats who went and worked for and supported Republicans. I do think the Democratic Party in New York City--we have to do a better job, and I'd like to be involved in helping to get that party back together." And about not running this year, "I said when I dropped out that I did it for a couple reasons, and I think all of them have been redeemed."

Biggest fucking pussy in Congress! He's still carrying the water for Nancy & Co. - and now he's Obama's bitch too.

Verbal = Word!

Pussyboy Weiner could have won but he backed out in May, fearful of Bloomberg. What a wimp!

Weiner puts more credibility to polls than he gives to the electorate and himself, making him the perennial loser.

It's time to get rid of Schumer sycophants like Antny, who give a bad name to wieners.

I lost all respect for this guy.
I only hope the new blood in the city council will shake things up. there was another schumer protege who lost.

My only fear is that all the unseated council members that supported Bloomberg will get patronage jobs in his administration.

I would be impressed if Thompson dumps out of politics, and takes all the democrats, Obama especially, to task for throwing him under the bus.

Bloomberg's manipulation of the media was so transparent, but there are so many sheeple that bought into it and believed it was a fait accompli(sp?).

None of this makes any sense.

It makes sense. Whiner et al. copped out. Now we have four more years of Gentryzilla but they won't be like the years when the money river was flowing.

I will never vote for any of these cop-outs.

True dat. Get ready for the most spectacular third term slump since LaGuardia.

would have definitely had white house support, not to mention more positive daily show exposure, but i wouldn't say it was a given that he would win.

def right about the dems in the council voting to repeal term limits.. people peg it all on bloomberg, but come now. if you're really upset about it, tell your rep to deny christine quinn the speaker's chair.

Who would want a Weiner for Mayor? The relevant question is what would have happened if some of those Democrats didn't sell out to Bloomberg and stood up for their party and the people. Christine Quinn has got to Go!!!!!!

You guys took the words right outa my mouth: PUSSY! And I don't use that word lightly.

Thompson was SUCH a weak candidate that I wonder if Bloomberg didn't buy him that candidacy somehow, just so he'd have a big nothing to run "against."

I held my nose and voted for Thompson, but Weiner will never get my vote for anything again. He does not have the necessary BALLS to be in politics, obviously.

You people are crazy. You actually WANTED a NYC Democratic machine politician as mayor? NYC Democratic party politicians aren't really a part of the national Democratic Party. They're barely the same species.

There's a reason Obama didn't stump for him, and it wasn't because crossing the Hudson would have been too out of the way.

the term limit thing was annoying, but hearing people say they wanted Bloomberg to lose primarily because he's 'too' arrogant blows my mind. I will tolerate arrogance if it garners competence any day of the week. Thompson doesn't exactly overflow with the aura of competence - not for the executive of New York City, not when there's a big teacher's union that needs to be roped in. Who do you think was going to work better with Arne Duncan - Bloomberg or Thompson? As much as it pains me to say it, of the two, this city can get more done with Bloomberg than Thompson.

then I'll say it again, Thompson is competent.
He overseas the city's finances for 8 years.
now get ready to be taxed. I hope you have vaseline ready.
Bloomberg bought the UFT with some nice concessions. He didn't rope them in as much as the union roped him in.
with a sweet package deal of raises and little givebacks.
how will we pay for that in a time of recession? with the money found during the meltdown?
