A gunman in car shot and killed a 38-year-old driver on Lorimer Street between Ten Eyck and Maujer streets in a shockingly brazen slaying in Williamsburg this afternoon. The perp pulled up beside the victim — described by police as a Hispanic male — at around 2:30 pm and fired into the his car, hitting him in the side, according to police. The wounded driver crashed his car and exited the vehicle before being transported to Woodhull Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A passerby who happened upon the aftermath of the slaying had this to say: "There was a fight, then someone got shot. UPS man witnessed the incident and the UPS truck is part of the crime scene. Don't know anything else, except saw cops try to revive the victim, who was bleeding from the back, pumped his chest, etc. as he was led into the ambulance."
Another source had more information about the crime:
"I live right across from the accident, but didn't hear anything until the first responders came. Apparently one man (possibly older looking, mob-ish) was chasing another man both in their cars. There was a car crash and the man being chased jumped out and was shot by the chaser. The shot man then ran for cover in a UPS truck parked in front of a mailing place. Again, these details were all overheard, so I don't know the truth to it all, but there's a lot of activity here and I thought you would want to know."
A police spokeswoman did not release any information about the suspect or his vehicle.

just me or is crime seriously on the upswing lately?!
Economy in toilet = more desperate skels + fewer cops to do anything about it
There is always a potential for a crime like this when people argue vehemently... this can happen anywhere and anytime. Yes, I think crime is on the upswing, but it's cyclical. Here is an article about crime stats that was published in the NY Daily News just a few weeks ago:
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/ny_crime/2008/09/30/2008-09-30_murders_send_city_crime_rate_upwards-3.html
That article is over a year old.
Probably would've made it if he didn't go to Woodhull.
So this gets news because it's in Williamsburg?
Why not cover all murders that occur?
I'm sure you'll find plenty of spots to report from other than "cool" spots.
Vollmich..it's definitely been going up..if you check the newsmap, there are plenty of shootings and stabbings.
Don't always believe what the stats say.
It gets news because people don't usually get shot on that street in broad daylight. Get over yourself.
We've written about too many murders all over the city. In this case, we also happened to get some tips—plus it's a daytime incident.
Thanks for posting, Jen.
It's still totally crazy over here. I think the press finally made it over, but Lorimer, which is a pretty major thoroughfare, is still completely blocked off.
And, seriously WZA, wtf is your problem? It's a crazy daytime shooting (maybe some sort of organized crime-related incident) and it's not even in the "cool" hipster-central part of the 'burg. It's news!
IMO gothamist covers too many murders and too much about williamsburg, but whatever.
That IS their home base, and the center of the hipster Universe.
Actually, Jen, if you look at your own newsmap, you will see that a hell of a lot of shootings in the city take place in broad daylight. There have been two kids shot during regular school hours over the past two weeks (and those are the ones I'm aware of).
Also, anyone who knows this area should be more than aware that there is still quite a lot of Mafia activity around there. Although I live in the Bronx, I have a good friend who lived there for years and I know of a couple of "shops" that are mob fronts. I'm not saying that's what led to this shooting, but it's a possibility.
That area is not a particularly "hipster" area of Williamsburgh.
Exactly!
My building, which is only vaguely hipster-y, is across from a public housing complex and the neighborhood is a great, diverse mix of Latinos, Italians and yes, even hipsters and yupsters.
I realize Bedford and N7 is completely taken over by Urban Outfitters prospective models, but my part of the neighborhood is not like that and it's a big neighborhood. This Williamsburg hate must end!
I'm concerned where the police will send the traffic tickets and if they will collect on them for when he 1. crashed his car then 2. double parked when he exited the vehicle to die. Those two alone will run several hundred dollars in fines and revenue for the MTA. In Williamsburg the cops care more about those type things than they do human life.
did he die because he was shot or he was sent to woodhull hospital?
whuh , whuh. (trombone sound) Good one , and a fair question. Woodhull has a great childbirth complex! That is it. It's not like you get a choice. Best option is to take the L , and make it to Bellvue for a good trauma unit. Thanks for reporting Jen. Sorry Wza HOTCUP Kojak wish you would just stop fucking talking about our neighborhood. A big "whatever" to them.
I lived in this neighborhood for six years (three doors down from where this happened) and can tell you it has turned into a shizzhole over the last two years, thanks to drug dealers so brazen they operate right in the open.
There was a shooting last August at on a Sunday afternoon--broad daylight, dozens of people out doing their thing. Guy was hit, bleeding, took off in a getaway car, bullets sprayed into cars on the streets. Not one article about it, anywhere.
Sure there are trust fund babies who rent there not knowing that neighborhood is rough but it's no Bedford Ave and any claims that goings-on there get more press coverage than elsewhere are knee-jerk reactions by people who don't know the area--which, by the way, isn't Williamsburg. Realtors and hipsters who rent there might like to say it is but it ain't. It's Bushwick.
You live near Lorimer and Ten Eyck? That's Williamsburg. You ain't even near Bushwick, son. Walk a couple blocks to the 90th precinct police station and ask the guys at the front desk if you live in "Bushwick" or "Williamsburg".
Lemme guess. You're new to the neighborhood? Go try and retrieve your mail from the post office--you'll have to go to the BUSHWICK station--idiot.
