Nightmare On The Green

tavernnightmare.jpg The Tavern on the Green seems to be cursed lately, so it's fitting that they housed a Halloween party from hell over the weekend. The Daily News reports that the restaurant was a frightening scene on Saturday night "when thousands of extra revelers showed up — many of whom bought bogus tickets online" for a party that promised to begin at 9 p.m. and include an open bar and an all-you-can-eat buffet.

The party-goers paid $60 to $130 for advance tickets to the event (many showing up around 8 p.m.), which was put on by promoters Alex and Leo Baskin. The spokeswoman for the restaurant pointed the finger at them, saying they oversold their event. In turn, the Baskins blame the restaurant for not opening on time; Leo Baskin told the paper that they weren't ready to open until past midnight. The party was eventually shut down at 1:30 a.m.

I love how no one wants to take responsibility. I'd prefer being called one of the thousands of "suckers" instead of "extra revelers" though.

When we walked up, at 11:30, security was already telling us it was going to get shut down. We watched the chaos for about ten minutes and then went elsewhere.

Amazed that there's been only 1 comment to this so far - could be some kind of culture gap between the typical TOTG Halloween party goer and readers of Gothamist. This has been a big story all day. The principal facebook group that was started over this mess has TRIPLED in size in about 7 hours. This party is a recurring "tradition" that usually goes off without issue. This year, Halloween fell on the night Tavern traditionally does its pre-Marathon pasta dinner, pushing the party later (I think). Rumor has it that the party was oversold by over 100% (5,000 vs. 2,250 per the contract with Tavern), most revelers paying cash for blocks of tickets. I'm not even sure there was a party of any type, any size, which is really odd and separate and apart from the overbooking issue. Huge mob of people in the rain - from what I've heard lucky we didn't have another City College stampede type incident.
