Sharpton's Ex-Wife, Daughter Arrested For Road Rage

According to the Post, the ex-wife and daughter of the Reverend Al Sharpton "were arrested [Friday] night after berating a pair of Harlem cops who pulled them over for running a red light in the wrong lane to get around their slow-moving, unmarked cruiser." The incident began at West 110th Street and 8th Avenue, when Dominique Sharpton, allegedly frustrated by the unmarked cruiser, "honked her horn and tailgated the vehicle" and then "furiously swerved across the double yellow line and sped through a red light to get past the cop car."

When the police pulled over the car, Sharpton and mother Kathy Jordan apparently disputed the cops' version of events in a "belligerent and argumentative" fashion and were taken to a station house in handcuffs. There, they were issued desk appearance tickets—Sharpton for "resisting arrest, and issued summonses for crossing a double yellow line and running a light" and Jordan for "resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration."

A lawyer for Reverend Al Sharpton told the Post said, "How what was apparently a minor traffic dispute ended up with two arrests with desk appearance tickets is highly questionable and unusual. We will pursue all answers in this matter." And the Reverend Al himself Tweeted this morning:

"I am getting calls that NY papers are reporting that Kathy and Dominique were cuffed and then released after challenging police on a traffic incident. Even though Kathy and I are not together, she remains my best friend and top supporter and of course dominique is our oldest child. I met with them and the attorney after the rally yesterday and was told to stay out of it. Dominique is grown and certainly can handle herself. Kathy showed the concern any mother would show. I cannot imagine how two unarmed women with no record, could be taken in cuffs from a traffic dispute with NO personal or property damage involved. No drugs or drinking at all. Well this is what we deal with everyday. We will never accept unfairness.

  • No matter what happens, it seems like this guy is always in the news.

if you keep mouthing off at a cop there going to arrest you it does not matter what your color is . they cut the car off and ran a red light right in front of the cops .not a bright thing to do . they should have taken the ticket and gone to court. most likley the cop would not have shown up at traffic court and they could have got it reduced or dropped .

the race card is not going to work this time

  • Kreo

"most likley the cop would not have shown up at traffic court" - there is 95% chance the cop would have shown up in court, it is their job. Every cop has a day in court once in a while, and this is the date for which all ticket hearings involving this cop are scheduled for.

  • S.K.

Should Al Sharpron defend his ex-wife against the cops? Why would a man defend a woman who left him and took half his money?

If it were my ex, I'd say you're on your own.

  • whitecastlerock

maybe he still claims her on his tax returns... oh wait, sorry, those returns were incinerated in a mysterious fire.

  • potsmoker

    hahha, kreo you nailed it.

i was going to write that.

    they know all the tricks.

i know one too, slow down and give them the first ammendment legal finger while obeying all the traffic laws.

  • inoyourider

The reason, Al, is that your stupid daughter broke the law...and then both your wife and daughter acted exactly like the entitled, above-the-law, race card playing morons that you're trained them to be.

  • Kreo

Hmm replies here are naive. People who drive a lot know that this is the cops' most loved tactic: when their shift is close to conclusion and they did not meet the quota for tickets they just drive slow in front of some car provoking it to either cross the yellow line, or time the intersection crossing in a way that the car behind them drives through red light. There are ways to see if the "stupid" driver in front of you is a low-profile cop, and in these cases, just play his game, after a few blocks when he sees you understand his game he will speed up and take off to search for another victim.

  • oldbluesmith

I totally agree. If you just want to spend time fighting with the police officers and spending money you can't afford, then you act like you are entitled and argue with police. What could have been so important they would chance this type of encounter. I hope the time they sat on the side of the street and in the station house was worth the publicity for Al and kept them occupied so they were not causing problems for other law abiding citizens.

  • PTG in nyc

Fat Al is still too busy taking credit for all things Michael Jackson to be bothered with this.

I'm not saying the cops definitely acted properly, but this does not sound like something worth playing the victimization card over.

  • ronshapley

she probably pulled the ghetto bitch Serena Williams routine...

  • Steven

The Al Sharpton racist express train has arrived!

  • joekemp

BECAUSE THEY ARE FUCKING BLACK! it's their ghetto style that is predominant in black culture that most of them think that is how they should act. They need to learn that this attitude is their downfall. Oh well, let them have this shithole with their crap that they have sown. I will see you in canada

  • NannyState

I've seen plenty of white bitches cook off in traffic, and surprise surprise, they're usually in a big SUV. Give them cunnys any sense of power or entitlement regardless of their origins, and you get these scenes.

  • freddynyc

Why are colored women so belligerent?

  • butterbutter

A note here. It's women of color, not colored women. Racist.

  • thefacts

People who throw around the word 'racist' are scoundrels and embarrassments. If you do not speak the correct Speak that they declare is currently in vogue, then they childishly resort to hateful name-calling.

I guess the NAACP is a racist organization? And the United Negro Scholarship Fund is for Uncle Toms?

    Grow up.

  • inoyourider

The NAACP is racist, but not for it's grammar.

  • butterbutter

    It's not that simple.

  • marcasm

"Well this is what we deal with everyday." Is that the race card being thrown ?

  • handsomedevil

If complaining that you are usually treated differently because of your race = "throwing the race card", then yes, that is indeed what Mr. Sharpton is saying. Glad to see your reading comprehension is up to snuff.

Personally, I think the whole concept of "the race card" is for whiney douches. (Yup, I just threw the douche card.)

  • marcasm

So these two women being arrested has to do with them being treated unfairly because of their race ? It had nothing to do with them breaking the law and being belligerent to police officers ? Two white, asian or hispanic women doing the same thing would not have been arrested ? The point I was trying to make was that there is no reason to bring race into it, they were arrested because of their actions. Also, if that photo is really you, consider changing your user name. Just Saying.

  • marcasm

My initial reaction to your photo may have been incorrect. It appears that you have purposely used the image of a mentally challenged person along with the user name handsomedevil in a failed attempt at humor. Shame on you !

  • valeriob

Sounds like they were acting like entitled biatches who think Fat Albert can get them out of anything. If were him I wouldn't touch this one.

  • Mr Mel

I think he has really used good judgement this time. He backed off, if he had ranted, Thompson's ratings would have gone even lower.

  • thefacts

    Hi Fatso:

If you get arrested, you get handcuffed.

    End of story.

  • youngpro

Actually no. I'm a lawyer, take my suggestion. Terms for an 'arrest' are pretty broad. A traffic stop, where you are stopped, exchanging the normal dialog with the officer means you re under his 'arrest.' An arrest doesn't just mean being cuffed.

    End of story.

  • Bobby Night

Well...in one sense you're right that the concept of arrest can sometimes be more broad than "dragged down to the pokey." But a traffic stop, a Terry stop, and other stops that constitute seizure under the Fourth Amendment are not necessarily considered "arrest" under the law. The distinction is important under Miranda, and to the officer's freedom to search. Not coincidentally, you're usually handcuffed when arrested -- but not usually handcuffed when subject only to a seizure of your person.

(This is the first time that I've actually had a use for that Crim Pro class -- but nonetheless.)

  • youngpro

still wrong, but i'll shut up for the sake of argument.

  • thefacts

There's being "arrested" for a traffic infraction.

There's also being "arrested" for a crime, where usual NYPD procedure is to handcuff.

    Let's not engage in sophistry.

Clearly, you may have been stopped(arrested) for a traffic infraction but have never really been arrested, have you now?

  • butterbutter

The question is Why are they getting arrested...

Simply disagreeing with an officer is Not grounds for getting arrested, or may be it is now in NYC.

If I was behind a car that was going really really slow for a long time, and there was NO way for me to get moving, I'd try to go around him too.

I think the women have a valid argument. On the face of it, those cops don't sound reasonable.

  • Bernie Madoff-Goetz

If they had a valid argument the course of action would be to challenge the ticket in court. Getting into a shouting match with a cop is pretty much a 100% guarantee of being arrested on the spot.
