Upstate Republican Drops Out Of House Race

2009_10_dedes.jpg There's no room for moderate views anymore: In the hotly contested and closely watched race for the 23rd Congressional District in upstate NY (because Republican John McHugh was appointed Secretary of the Army), Republican candidate Dede Scozzafava has dropped out. Scozzafava was lacking money and trailing in the polls, partly due to her support of same-sex marriage and abortion rights. Hoffman has been endorsed by Sarah Palin and former governor George Pataki, while President Obama raised money for Democratic candidate Bill Owens.

Wow. so the GOP forced her out (yeh I know poll numbers and finance are the official cause of death) but expect her to get a spot somewhere in the GOP establishment or related businesses. I'd have liked to see her go the distance. Now Paterson on the other hand. If only he'd take the hint...

  • BklynsFinest

Whoa! and then she turned around and endorsed the Democrat! Cool her own woman she is!

The GOP is still trying to resuscitate it's base. The problem is they're too dead and they don't realize it's over. Too many of them still haven't made peace with the fact that there's a black president and he's not the socialist threat they feared. Their base is is almost totally on Medicare and just try to take it away from them.

Frankly the move is very helpful to the GOP in the short-term. There is a good chance they will save this seat now.

However, long-term they are going to need to drop some of the crazier shit or they really will be a regional party confined to the rural South.

I really don't see this as helpful at all to the GOP as a whole. If Hoffman takes the seat he'll caucus with the republicans but he won't have any real party loyalty. Kinda like Lieberman.

The Republican Party is busy marching off the edge of the world. At least at the moment they're not taking the rest of us with them.

  • redhookreject

what does the GOP stand for anymore? I can think of some things but, not sure they really help get people elected unless your full of hate...
