Bloomberg Leads Thompson In Yet Another Poll

2009_07_bloomthomp.jpg A new Marist poll showed that incumbent Mayor Michael Bloomberg leads challenger City Comptroller William Thompson by 15 points among likely voters, 53% to 38%. What's more, the poll notes, "Mayor Bloomberg’s action to extend term limits from two to three terms is not a deciding factor for 45% of voters. Although a large proportion of voters — 43% — says it makes them less likely to vote for the mayor, this number has not grown through the course of the campaign."

While this number is similar to the Quinnipiac poll (Bloomberg 53%, Thompson 35%), there are caveats: Marist Poll director Lee Miringoff told the Daily News, "That 53 is not in and of itself an overwhelming number. It means that almost half the city say they're either undecided or plan on voting for somebody else. So, for an incumbent of two terms, that suggests a good lead, but not, not necessarily one where he's going to run up the score." And Thompson's campaign pointed out that Marist's poll before the 2005 election wasn't accurate, since it said Bloomberg had a 40 point lead but actually won the election by 20 points.

Thompson's campaign revealed details of an internal poll that showed he was trailing Bloomberg by 8 points. However, PolitickerNY described the conference call to announce the results as "hastily" arranged—the pollster had to break out his calculator to answer a question about the poll's margin of error (4 points)—and City Room said, "These kinds of internal polls do not meet the polling standards that The New York Times other news media outlets and other polling groups use when conducting polls."

those Marist folks called me 7 time before finally getting me...

the poll question about term limits was very strangely worded. along the lines of when you beat your wife where you sorry... no right way to answer that.

3 points in two days, with 4 days left to close 15 points. that's only like 4 points per day, keep it up, billy!

Wow. If the Democrats had run a candidate in this race they might have been able to win it.

They will only run a hack. If the guy is really good they wont be able to control him.

expect lots and lots of calls from bloomberg.
they know 53 percent is not a good number and it isn't.
this race ain't over. the people are not stupid.

Yes, they are stupid. That's the only explanation why the same voting public that voted twice clearly for term limits would even consider voting for the self-serving liar who decided to ignore the results.

then the stupid will get what they deserve.
and they will get hit with that $115 ticket from any of the city's agencies. and yes, parking enforcement is part of the NYPD, the NYPD took over that agency years ago.
NYPD is on their uniform patches.

I'd find it more stupid to vote for Thompson who has said absolutely nothing to convince me that he would make a better mayor than Bloomie, or even a good mayor.

Term limits for public servants are also stupid; the people who voted for them probably just pulled the lever not knowing what they were voting for, or they'd much rather be lazy and not exercise their right to vote someone out.
