Transit Strike Looms As NY Sports Teams Invade Philly

2009_10_phansept.jpg There are ominous forecasts flying around spelling trouble for New York City's special visit to Philly this weekend. Members of Transport Workers Union Local 234 in Philadelphia voted Sunday to authorize a regional transit strike as of 12:01 a.m. tonight if an agreement cannot be reached. SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority) spokesman Richard Maloney called the talks thus far '“constructive” but stopped short of saying any real progress was made," according to the Post.

Negotiations are due to resume at 5 p.m. today. The strike would affect all bus and subway service throughout the city, and potentially create mass chaos on what is shaping up to be an awesome sports weekend. The Yankees are in town for Games 3, 4 and 5 of the World Series, scheduled to take place at Citizen's Bank Park Saturday, Sunday and Monday, and the Giants are also in town, playing across the street from Citizen's Bank vs. division rivals the Eagles on Sunday at 1. To add to the pressure, there are also two rock concerts, two hockey games and a basketball game all scheduled this weekend in Philly, all in the same sports complex! We guess this means Andy Pettitte probably won't be following Cliff Lee's lead.

I'm all for unions but this is BS.
Fuck you, get to work and be glad you're working.

Is a SEPTA on strike worse than SEPTA on a normal day?

I love SEPTA. Philly has real live trollys, the fare is cheaper, and the trains less crowded. They don't run as often but then again Philly is like a tenth the size of NYC.

It ain't perfect, but its not gridlocked by Harrisburg the way the MTA is in Albany. I bet they work it out by Saturday night... Nothing like the Broad St line to the Bank!

I rode Septa for a lot of years, can't say that I love them. The new trolleys on Girard are nice, but a lot of town is unreachable by the two main (only) lines. Also what the heck is the ridge street spur? Oh yeah, part of a plan for diamond shaped system built around city hall that never was finished.

Septa, like the MTA is always battling with the state for funds and threatening to strike. Unlike the MTA they can't raise their fairs, because a lot of folks will just choose to drive. So they have to use opportunities like this... I guess.

all that being said the A train was so messed up last night, I could have ridden a bike to Philadelphia in the time it took me to get home.

The spur was built as a replacement for a planned downtown subway loop that would have run west from the current terminus at 18th, turned north under 19th street, turned east under Arch street, and connected to the Broad Street main line at Arch street; work began on this loop in 1915 but was canceled the following year due to lack of funding

Take your Phillies sign and go DIAF.

Or as they say in England: SEPTA, as in septic, as in tank, as in Yank.

That was meant as a reply to NannyState's brilliant comment.
