Pedestrian Fatally Struck In The Bronx, Off-Duty Cop In Custody

2009_10_bxfatped.jpg Earlier this morning, around 7 a.m., a woman was struck by a vehicle at West 232nd Street and Kingsbridge Avenue. The woman later died at St. Barnabas Hospital and now an off-duty police officer has been taken into custody.

WCBS 2 reports, "Police determined upon arrival that off-duty NYPD Detective Kevin Spellman, 42, was driving a 2009 Chevy southbound on Kingsbridge Avenue when he struck the unidentified female victim." WABC 7 says he was "allegedly drunk." Update: The Daily News reports, "Spellman refused a Breathalyzer test at the scene, but his blood was taken at a local hospital sometime before noon, police said."

Last month, an off-duty police officer fatally struck a woman trying to hail a cab in Brooklyn. He was indicted for manslaughter and DWI.

Cops are either killing people while off-duty, or lying while filling out their reports. Great image guys.

Hey, it's very stressful having to fill out all those false reports. They have to be allowed to drink to forget.

Courtesty
Professionalism
Respect

Arnold Schwarzenegger's acrostic was much more effective.

Damn Cops, chill the fuck out on the drinking and driving for a sec.

I own a car, but never take it out if there's even a chance that booze will be involved. We are so lucky to live in a city that has 24 hour subway service. These damn cops have such an inflated sense of entitlement that they can't take the subway when drinking, like other civilized citizens do. It makes me so angry to hear about such a completely preventable tragedy.

the common refrain you hear every time a story like this, or Patrick Pogan, or any of the other instances of police brutality/incompetence stories hits is: "it's just a few bad apples that give police officers a bad name."

Is it really though? or is it that there are actually only a handful of good apples in a batch that is overall mostly bad?

You have to figure that for every cop who drunkenly mows down a pedestrian or brutalizes a civilian on camera, there are more who drove drunk and didn't get caught, or brutalized somebody and got away with it. How many? who knows.

I'm pretty much beyond even hoping that in my lifetime, i'll see an honest, competent, and law-abiding police force in New York.

once Bloomberg gets re-elected(and based on %-he will), these two officers(both veterans with friends) will be all ok. too bad this wasn't like six-nine months between election time.

The officer is a 20 year veteran.

The victim was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Another person may have been treated for Lincoln Hospital with back pain.
The driver was taken into custody and charges are pending.
A neighbor described one of the victims in the crash as an elderly Vietnamese woman who walked up and down the block collecting cans.
The impact of the crash was so violent it shattered a windshield.
Neighbors say the intersection is busy and dangerous.
"There are two schools and there's a crossing for children and we have a lot of senior citizens...and this is not the first incident of speed and driving in this area," said Jacqueline Mateo.

20 year veteran officer backed with a strong union (probable Caucasian)

Minority, old woman.

Nothing will happen.

Let me take a wild guess. Detective Kevin Spellman refused to take a Breathalyzer test at the scene of the accident.

This is indicative of a bigger problem. Cops who think that the law does not apply to them. A law as simple as do not run people over and then leave the scene of the crime. If cops can not follow a law as simple as that how are they supposed to enforce all the other laws?

Cops should be held responsible for their actions to a higher degree than ordinary citizens. How are we supposed to have any faith in someone upholding the law when they have no respect for it at all when it comes to their own actions.

Not to mention it is just morally a disgusting action. Perhaps the police should re-evaluate the testing procedures for future applicants in hopes of weeding out the sociopaths who want to wander the streets with a gun, or drive through red lights and run down innocent pedestrians.

I won't mention names but yeah my car was plowed down by an off duty cop who tried to drive away until I road blocked him and jumped outta the car.
