Brooklyn Heights Lady Fears Gang Activity

When is teen vampire gang initiation week?
One Brooklyn Heights resident alerted fellow neighbors about possible gang activity in the neighborhood this week, after spotting four unruly teenagers on Hicks.

Her red warning flag went up with the following words: "Please be advised at approximately 9:00 p.m. tonight as I was walking home on Hicks between Montague and Joralemon I was accosted by a gang of four boys, approximately 14 -15 years of age. I am certain it was a gang initiation. The same thing happened to me five years ago in Cobble Hill. This time when they asked me what time is it, do you have a cigarette, why won’t you stop and talk to us, I just kept my head down and kept walking. I saw a cab. Knocked on the window, and said, call the cops. When the police arrived of course the gang was long gone. But I put them on notice."

Later, after being accused of overreacting, the "victim" explained that she is an expert spotter of teen gang activity, and also says the school she teaches at in the South Bronx has been put on notice over the Blood's initiation week — rumors of which go around annually at Halloween (and Easter). We contacted the NYPD for their comment on the initiation rumors, but this Brooklyn Heights resident warns that if you see any "baby-bangers" out there: keep walking! Gang or no gang, teenagers really are terrifying — just check out what the teen girls in Williamsburg are up to!

So glad she survived. Sounds like a harrowing experience.

The poor dear! I am similarly CONVINCED that the Park Slope Baby Carriage Mafia is going to "whack" me. I see their hooded strollers EVERYWHERE. Stalking me. TERROR.

Wow, I had no idea asking for a cigarette was a gang initiation. This happens to me all the time. We must be in the midst of a crime wave.

Yep, it's all you have to do to become a Blood these days from what I've heard -- successfully bum a cigarette from a stranger.

Entrance standards for gangs are becoming as watered down as those for the military and the NYPD.

I read the article and in the comments two additional groups of people a group of teens had menacingly asked them for the time, but didn't do anything to them. I honestly think it's a bunch of little jerks who are just trying to scare people who buy into the "Halloween Gang Initiation" myth. Not cool, but probably hilarious to a bunch of 14 year olds.

I would think BH is another area that should or already has a neighborhood watch group. where's the private jewish security patrol? how come they get to do it?

All groups of teens are menacing. When I was teen, I stayed away from groups of teens.

For anyone who has been held up at gunpoint or knifepoint after being asked for the time (or, strangely, for the color of your socks) or a cigarette, having the same situation occur will send off alarms.

I'll bet that the same people teasing her also make comments when someone IS held up, assaulted, raped, and so on about what they should have done differently.

I'm glad that so many people are cavalier about this sort of thing. And I hope you never experience being robbed at gunpoint and/or pistol-whipped for not having enough cash on you.

Yep, and that's understandable. But not every mugging is a "gang initiation ritual," and it's branding it that way that made me laugh a little at her story. "I'm certain it was a gang ritual. I can recognize those because I was mugged once." Uh, no, being a mugging victim doesn't make you an expert on gangs.

she did call them "baby bangers".
God gave you feet lady, use them.
why would someone want to know the color of my socks? of course, gang initiation.

jayclay, this is true. My guess is it was just a bunch of kids looking for a thrill.

Now might not be the best time to let her know about the mafia in her drainpipes.

I would love to run into some of these little assholes.
Someone needs to give them the beatings their parents never did.

This is why people who aren't from Brooklyn shouldn't move in. They're 14-15 yr old kids. Grow a set and yell at their little punk asses. If you're going to get robbed or cut or whatever via a gang initiation, chances are it's going to happen quick-fast.

Her first mistake was keeping her head down. A great way to not fall victim to peoples menacing is to be confident and assertive in your walk and manner. Welcome to BK. Lesson 1 - Walk with your head up and your face mean

Yeah tell us how to be cool you cool Brooklyn shmuck!!!

who said anything about being 'cool'?

This is a big city and in a big city there is crime and people who target the weak. By asserting your position you are helping yourself not be an easy target.....

Theres gonna be a lot more red flags going up on Halloween.

Is it possible that Brooklyn is setting itself up for a Bernie Goetz attitude check?

Like many people, I'm conflicted about Bernie Goetz. If he wasn't utterly insane, and didn't shoot that last kid, he'd be awesome. If we had one of those cases every twenty years or so I think we'd see better results than crimestats will ever give us.

Don't these people have anything better to do? Oh, wait...
