This year (and last) the annual Greenwich Village Halloween Parade was scaled back after sponsors were hit with budget cuts and donations slowed down. As of October 12th only three floats were expected (down from the normal 20).
There's been a last minute save, however. WCBS reports that "a dozen floats are now being prepared." It seems the community came through to make it happen. However, one local man was quoted as saying, "I'm against all parades. People think that they can get away with anything when they're in a big group of people."
Like it or not, the parade will go on around 7 p.m. this Saturday. Let your freak flag fly, etc. and share your photos with us—send them to photos@gothamist.com or tag them with "gothamist" on Flickr.

kostume kult FTW!!
The freaks will march -- with or without a sponsored parade!
Chicks with their slutty Costumes!

Wow. Sounds like this could be any number of Gothamist commenters. Chill out, guy. I wouldn't be caught dead at any parade, but if people want to go watch them, that's no skin off my nose.
The Halloween was once an illegal, renegade event like the annual pillow fight in Union Square. After the third year, it got so big that they decided to legalize it.
An attempt was made to get a permit for the Pillow Fight last year but it was denied, and moved to Wall St.
But I do believe that yes, you can get away with anything if you're in a big group of people :)
*Halloween Parade. Apologies
Maybe BECAUSE of the recession last year's parade was the most fun Village Halloween Parade I've ever been to. It took us forever waiting on the platform for a train we take back.
