No Winner For Mets Fans With Yankees-Phillies World Series

2009_10_sadmrmet.jpg With the World Series set for a Yankees-Phillies showdown, Mets fans really caught in between a rock and a hard place. Do they root for their bitter division rival or their hated crosstown rival? Decisions! As Jon Stewart said last night, "I hate the Yankees and the Phillies...I'm a Mets fan. So, for me, [Sunday night] was like watching your wife f--- the Yankees and the Phillies!"

Daily News deputy sports editor Bill Price writes, "After much deliberation, I have to say, (gulp), 'Go Yankees!'...Phillies fans are obnoxious. If their team ever wins back-to-back titles, New Yorkers (Mets and Yankees fans) will never hear the end of it. It's bad enough they have beaten out the Mets in the NL East the last three years, but could you imagine the talk coming from cheese steak land if they ever beat the mighty Yankees in the World Series?"

Steve Greco, of Smithtown, tells Newsday, "I will root for the Phillies. I don't like them, but I hate the Yankees more. Plus I am a National League fan. I have never set foot in Yankee Stadium, old or new, and I plan to keep it that way. This comes from being outnumbered by Yankee fans during my teen years and taking their verbal abuse during the Mets’ tough years.”

Eli Vargas, Modell's employee and Mets fan, who sold tons of Yankees gear yesterday, revealed that he was having a "real tough time right now," to the NY Times: "They tell me the longer I wait, the sweeter it’s going to be. But I was 3 years old in 1986, so I don’t really remember. I want to know what it feels like to win."

Why are people even talking about the Mets or their fans in the month of October?

The only thing that bothers me about Phillies fans is that they're also Eagles fans. But I like the fact that the Phillies are keeping the Mets down. I'd root for the Phillies before the Mutts.

my condolences to Mets fans, this is a tough choice. Whenever there's a sporting event between two teams that I loathe, I root for good, solid officiating :)

As a Mets fan, stick to what I've done for the past few years.
Not pay attention.

Yep, that what I do. See no Evil, hear no Evil.

If you're a Mets fan, don't even think about it. Just find other things to do, like bleeding your propane tank.

Asked what team he would rather see win in the series, José Reyes smiled, said "No comprendo", sank his double-bogey putt, then did a little celebratory dance as he walked off the green.

I never understand the emotion of a sports fan. If your team wins great if they lose it's always next year. What do you get out of million dollar players winning? Do the players actually care about all of this? All they is cross their team if they don't give them the huge contract.

This is a great series for Mets fans as long as we concentrate on whichever despised team loses each night.

The stewart line was so much funnier when he delivered it, with a pause between the words wife... and "sleep with the phillies and the yankees".

As for who mets fans should root for- what an asinine question. if it were the Mets and the red sox in the series (again), who do you think yankees fans would be rooting for. BOSTON?!?! never in a million years. any mets fan who roots for the phils truly has no pride in their team.

I come from a line of passionate Dodgers fans, and the team's move out of Brooklyn actually pitted my dad and uncle in an all-out, decades long Mets vs. Yanks war that kinda separates the family to this day. They just can't put it down, you know? Geez.

As a Mets fan, I've basically been rooting for the Yankees since their series with Anaheim was over. There is nothing I would like to see more than the Phillies get destroyed and I don't care who by (and it was clear the Angels couldn't do it). Yankees fans can be insufferable, but Phillies fans are the biggest sore winners in baseball. Besides, at least New York is a civilized place that deserves a sports championship.

As a Mets fan of long standing,(and suffering), I really don't care who wins.

This is really an asinine question. I am a Mets fan, AND a NYer. I am rooting for the Yankees. There is no cross-town rivalry, as the Mets and Yankees only recently began playing regular season games against each other, and the Dodgers/ Giants/ Yankees debate happened decades ago. Mets fans want the Phillies to lose. We want the Braves to lose, the Marlins, etc. If there's ever another subway series, THEN we'll want the Yankees to lose. But this year, I want the NY team to win. How could you think otherwise? I hope the Yankees pound the Phillies.

I voted for the apocalypse, but really I'll be rooting for the Phils to beat the Yanks. The Yankees are the most annoying franchise in sports. And while Philly fans are just as obnoxious as Yankee fans there's not many Philly fans in NY, and the NY papers and TV will stop covering baseball once the Phils win. If the Yankees win, I'll just have to keep hearing about it.
