New troubles are bubbling up for the NYPD: Internal Affairs and Prosecutors have identified "as many as two dozen cases in the past year in which cops allegedly made false statements involving routine arrests," according to the Post. This is a sharp increase over previous years, when one or two such cases would be discovered and prosecuted.
While those cases historically stemmed from big time corruption cases, such as the Brooklyn cops who were caught stealing drugs from dealers, internal affairs is finding the new cases more troubling because the "officers appear willing to take insidious shortcuts and lie on arrest reports when they are processing even routine collars, such as grand larceny, burglaries and robberies."
Sometimes, when this kind of lazy corruption is uncovered, the perps often get to walk free and sue the city for wrongful arrest, such as in the case of Bronx cop Pedro Corniel, who lied and said he was the arresting officer of a water meter thief, though he wasn't even in the building when the suspect was caught. NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne told the Post, "It doesn't necessarily reflect an increased level of the problem but less acceptance of the practice and increased prosecution of it."

i blame them for everything but stealing drugs from dealers...that's just common sense.
Translation: Yeah we're lying scumbags, but now the MAN is cracking down getting all up in our grills so I gotta tell the rest of the crew to 'be cool, bitch, be cool'."
There are people for whom it's news that cops lie all the time, even in the most petty of cases? Weird.
If these “investigators” could only find 20 cases in a whole year, they obviously weren't looking all that hard.
obviously serpico was not there to bust the investigators' chops.
:o
cops lie?
is this new news or old news?
Do you know how hard it is to tell the truth using a typewriter?
NYPD lying??? NO!!! Two dozen cases in the past year? And thats an increase over the 1 or 2 cases in previous years? Is this a joke?
The NYPD routinely lies and covers for their own in any case they think they can get away with. If this is 'increased prosecution' I wonder what a 'crack down' would uncover. The bicyclist getting pushed over in Times Sq, the whole seedy GOP convention episode....it isnt even news that the NYPD lies all the time.
It would be news if you could find a single case of them not lying.
"Sometimes, when this kind of lazy corruption is uncovered, the perps often get to walk free"
Sometimes often? Should those be multiplied together to yield occasionally, or do you add them together to get frequently? I always get confused with date math.
'cuse me, but is it a 'white lie' if a cop gives you an arrest record, jail time, ruins your chance to get a job, loan, place to live, etc.?
Maybe we could change things this way. Consider cops caught lying be given the treatment they are subjecting the 'perp' to. This might make them more aware of the seriousness of their actions on other peoples' lives (though it's imaginable that they were, until this weekend, all aspiring Bernie Keriks).
It appears that they lack, by training, any respect for the Constitution. No cop thinks of citizens as innocent until proven guilty. For blue-collar white-liars, it's the other way around: screw the 5th, 6th, and 14th amendments.
NYPD is the BEST!
