The Meh: Cruel Black Dove/Bridges and Powerlines Were... Enjoyable
Brooklyn-based Cruel Black Dove brought an oh-so-dark edge to CMJ on Friday night. Decked out in red lights and looking as if the Donnas went goth for a night, CBD rocked their way through a surprisingly catchy set of altogether gloomy music. Though their set got more energetic towards the end, and included some MSI-influenced electronics, they stuck to a slow, swaying formula with lots of booming drums and operatic melodies. Lead singer Anastasia Dimou moaned and growled through the songs with a little too much reverb, but the fuzz bass from Shirley Ho added a much needed garage sound, taking them out of the "goth" category and moving them somewhere with a little more breathing room.
Bridges and Powerlines followed with a set almost the exact opposite of CBD's. Powerlines was all clangy guitars and hot synth. All plaid shirts and indie and trumpets. Theirs was a set of solid, sharp pop music with some electronica thrown in now and then for kicks. Though it was nothing to write home about, they put together an entirely satisfying set filled with catchy riffs and beautiful melodies. And really, that's all you can ask of music. — Jaya Harrover Saxena

Hey i was at that show...
I'm not saying that the Brooklyn Bowl show was the coolest thing ever, or the fact that most people try not to party into the night on a Thursday night...it wasn't as bad a night as the reviewer suggests...Here are some mitigating points:
1. this is Williamsburg and, for all intents and purposes, charges a minimum to Manhattan prices (it wasn't $9 beer night, just $6.50...)
2. It's a new venue that has a pretty extensive beer list
3. YACHT was pretty great and all the people who waited were given a pretty exciting show
I think the Brooklyn Bowl was the showcase moreso than the bands...at a music festival no less...go figure...
I've tried to see YACHT 3 times and every single time they played 3+ hours later than advertised. What the fuck?
The Protomen Saturday night at the Webster Hall Studio were AMAZING.
No no look it's spelled YACHT but it's actually pronounced THROATWARBLER MANGROVE.
If the bands at the Living Room used amplifiers, I hope the kiddies had hearing protection. I don't see any in Olivia's right ear.
From the linked interview: How do the bands change their shows for the young ears? We encourage the bands to play their songs as they normally would. We work with the venues to carefully monitor volume.
