Canal Street Under SkyWatch

skywatchcanal.jpg Have the NYPD raised a SkyWatch over Canal Street to curb the alleged "spike in crime" in the area, or are they cracking down on illegal vendors and counterfeiters again?

NYC the Blog happened upon the scene over the weekend, and reports back that "above the hectic crowds of Canal Street this Sunday afternoon was a Skywatch unit. Sitting near Church St looking east down Canal, the tactical tower was supplemented by two officers near by on ground duty. It has been reported that the towers get dispatched to areas that have seen a spike in crime. [We] couldn't help wonder if they might be keeping an eye on the street vendors in the area selling Gucci sneakers on the cheap."

Indeed, the Counterfeit Culture has had a watchful eye on them before... and their peak holiday season is nearly upon us.

there is no way they'll get rid of the illegal vending--most days you have to physically fight your way down canal street to avoid the hordes of people yelling BAG BAG BAG BAG BAG [usually with your own bag, thus proving to them in some way that you do not, in fact, need another bag]

I was on Canal Street on Sunday, and I can assure you the tower has absolutely no effect on the street peddling. Less than a block away, they were set up on BOTH sides of the sidewalk leaving about a 3' path down the center for pedestrians.

It's been up for at least three weeks and if it runs all the illegal vending out of town that would be great.

This is not new. It has been there since at least October 12. Maybe it was up then, taken down and brought back?
