Game 6 Rain Out Frustrates Fans

Last night's postponement of the Yankees' and Angels' ALCS Game 6 may have seemed appropriate, given the deluge, but fans who showed up at Yankee Stadium were fuming. A woman who drove five hours hoping to see the Yankees clinch things told the Daily News, "This is ridiculous. They can play in this weather. I wouldn't be so angry if I didn't have to work Monday morning, but if the game goes late tomorrow I still have to drive home."

And five hours is nothing compared to the family from El Paso, Texas that drove to stadium—the News says, "The Ortiz family couldn't stay for tonight's makeup game because the dad has to be back at work tomorrow morning." The game was called two hours before the 8:20 p.m. start time; one man griped, "Of course, they still make us pay for parking. Do I get my $30 back? Nah, of course not."

As for the Yankees themselves, they were calm. Mariano Rivera said, "It's one day off, that's it. We have been through this. We have to wait. I was ready to play [last night] and will be ready [tonight]," and Mark Teixeira said, "We've had so many days off this entire postseason. A short series the first series , waiting around, then travel days. You just kinda get used to it." Nick Swisher remarked about the $1.5 billion structure, "The man upstairs didn't think it was time for us to play. We were ready to play, but rain happens and we don't have a roof."

Everyone is aware there's always a chance of a rain-out.

Shut up and suck it up.

Amazing how all of you side with Major League Baseball on this and couldn't care less about the average Joe... Of course because it didn't effect you personally it's fair game to mock others. What great people you are, take a bow. Bottom line, they open the stadium to make money off of the fans, parking, concessions, restaurants, team shops etc. This game could have been started at 10pm if they wanted to. In Brooklyn the rain was gone by 9:15pm. There was no reason not to wait. If they were so concerned with rain, they could have called the game in the early afternoon.

    I agree with you there.

My comment was more of driving all the way to the Bronx for a SPORTS game.

Here's a hint to the Ortiz family for next time.

1.) Don't get quoted in a newspaper or on TV.

2.) Call in sick on Monday if it's that important to you... and clearly it is... as you drived 2200 miles.

    That is called extreme devotion.

New York to El Paso is 2,200 miles. Let's assume the game hadn't been called and was held as scheduled. If they left immediately after the game and drove straight through to El Paso, with two or more drivers taking turns and stopping only for gas, they would have made it back home somewhere around 6 am Monday morning. And Dad then would have had to put in a full workday.

Getting back by Monday morning would be cutting it close even leaving after last night's game. El Paso is a 2200 mile drive, 34 hours not counting stops.

I imagine the field was muddy mess. Don't know out there in the Bronx, but in Brooklyn it actually started raining harder about 8pm. It was expected and called for.

Was this woman sitting in the same city as the rest of us? By the time the game was postponed it had been pouring rain for more than 24 hours. It finally stopped around 11PM.

  • She drove FIVE HOURS, edEx! The Yankees can play in a flood, for all she cares!

  • Sorry for my nearly 5-hour late response... 2200 miles? Really? You're that well planned? No checking of the weather? No making a hotel reservation? I feel no pity—Outrageous!

Hey Edex, don't believe a word of it.
