Bloomberg Defends $pending, Lands Endorsements Trifecta

After campaign records showed that Mayor Bloomberg had spent $85 million (through Friday) on his third term mayoral bid, people were amazed—it was, according to the NY TImes, the most anyone had personally spent on any sort of U.S. public office—and disgusted. But the Mayor defended the amount, saying yesterday at an event in Queens, "It costs a lot of money to get a message out and I'm trying to show what we've done and tell people."

The Daily News reports that the mayor added, "It's very difficult to get people to know in a city this size the breadth of the things we've done. I'm trying to reach out to every single community." Which his challenger, City Comptroller Bill Thompson, took as a sort of compliment, "He's worried about my candidacy - or you have to believe he's trying to get the people of New York to forget about his record, and that's why he's spending this amount of money."

In the meantime, the Daily News' editorial board endorsed Bloomberg for a third term: "By every significant measure - from plummeting crime and rising school achievement to more and better parks and cleaner streets - Bloomberg has led the city decisively in the right direction over the last eight years." This means all three of the city's major dailies have given the thumbs up to the billionaire incumbent—the Post endorsed him on Friday and the Times yesterday.

wha... The Times for once did not endorse a Democrat? Ice cubes are floating in hell.

I like Bloomberg as mayor; I don;t like the repeal of the term limits law.

Let him spend as much money as he wants, and hopefully he spends it locally.

  • Mr Mel

However, he's been a great Mayor.

In Carroll Gardens last week there where hundreds of paid Bloomberg people out ringing bells at 7pm.

One came by my place and asked for my support for the mayor, and he admitted that he was getting paid and isn't even registered to vote, yet he said he voted for Obama. ????? not sure how that works.

I'm not saying he's done a crap job, but its wasn't like he make New York that much better either.

He still can't answer the question, why he did away with the will of the people, spinning it that everyone can vote him out.

but Mike nobody else has 85 million to slander and pander like you do... and local media are just a joke. and why I get so ticked that you see so many Bloomberg progress banners all over the gothamist.

  • REALITY CHECK

It does not matter how good or bad an elected leader is. Democratic principles trump any one man.

Term limits will always push someone good out, just as much as it will push someone bad out. Bloomberg took this away from the people, not only without permission, but against the people's clear expression in two referendums. It's unforgivable.

Bloomberg is not indispensable. We deserve respect. We deserve a real democracy. It's time for someone new.

Lol? I didn't get a chance to vote for term limits. And I don't want term limits on executive branch members of government because we can vote them out; legislators however need to get the fuck out. I'd much rather have term limits on the retards in Congress than Mayor Mike who at least has the nerve to stand up to motorists.

Bloomberg took this away from the people, not only without permission, but against the people's clear expression in two referendums. It's unforgivable.

Two referendums, 13 and 16 years ago - and ironically, bought and paid for by another billionaire, Ron Lauder.

We deserve respect. We deserve a real democracy.

You'll get democracy on the first Tuesday in November. And while we're on the subject, consider the alternative: a no name Republican runs in place of Bloomberg. Thompson romps to victory because most voters in New York will go into the voting booth and reflexively pull the lever next to the Democrat. Is that "democracy"? Before Giuliani replaced Dinkins the next Mayor of New York was always chosen in the Democratic primary. Hardly seems fair to anyone registered in another party or in none at all.

    AL SHARPTON FOR MAYOR.

  • potsmoker

a google search for 'worlds worst mayor'

comes up with Mike Bloomberg ads for a good reason,

    its not money kids...

a man who never raised a finger for nyc

until his ego decided he wanted to be mayor.

  • redhookreject

who is this Mike Bloomberg? and what has he done...???

yeah, after 8 years anyone who asks that question, just won't be voting.

85 million could sure have helped a hellva long list of causes and charities,

hey mike, its for your ego. admit it and get over it. cause the city won't float off into the Atlantic if you walk away. and trust me if it didn't happen during Dinkins it won't happen if Thompson wins. I hear he's the best comptroller we ever had.

  • Bernie Madoff-Goetz

Why doesn't he just consolidate all of those designs into one shirt that reads: "Groupthinkers For Mike." Ya know, because if I were to wear the Latinos For Mike shirt, I'd feel incredibly powerful knowing that my shirt speaks for ALL Latinos but nowhere near as powerful as I would feel knowing that I was the voice of groupthink in general.
