Accused Killer Of 92-Year-Old "Had A Rough Life"

2009_10_jblair2.jpg The 18-year-old who is accused of firing a gun into the air—and killing a 92-year-old woman in her Bronx home—pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder. Jamal Blair is being held without bail and his lawyer is trying to explain that his client has had a tough childhood, "In 1993 he was 2 years old and witnessed his father murder his mother. He stayed with his mother's body until his grandparents found discovered what happened almost a day later. It still stays with him."

However, Shahron Williams van Rooij, daughter of victim Sadie Mitchell, told the Daily News, "I'm not buying any of it. He is culpable. Period. End of story." Prosecutors also pointed out that Blair confessed to police, "I was coming from school. I was walking with two of my friends....I shot one shot in the air. I threw the gun into the crowd." That one shot entered Mitchell's house and hit her in her hip and traveled into her lungs. She died at Jacobi Hospital.

When being escorted from the precinct house on Thursday night, Blair claimed the police framed him. His lawyer thinks the second-degree murder charge is too harsh and believes manslaughter is more appropriate for Blair to face.

Police still haven't recovered the gun, which Blair reportedly said he threw into another yard.

who the f in the world in their right mind carry a friggin' gun? and fire into the air??? baffles me. the boy definitely is dealing with a lot of demons. i hope he saves his own soul.

  • Billiamsburg

Nothing says 'honest, hard-working boy' like carrying a gun in your waistband

  • S.K.

Compared to his 92-year-old victim, I doubt this teenage homie's life was "so tough."

The old lady was born at a time when former slaves were still alive to tell stories of horrible mistreatment. She was also old enough to recall the Great Depression, Jim Crow, sharecropping, and lynchings.

This homeboy had the right to vote, lived in a taxpayer-subsidized project, and given a second chance after a prior drug conviction.

Darn right that the victim's daughter isn't buying any of his excuses. Perhaps if this spoiled 21st century perp were to relive all the horrible 20th century experiences of his victim, he would value life.

  • inoyourider

Fuck him and his sob story.

  • Mr Mel

He is a problem child, no question. He did what he did. Hopefully if he's incarcerated long enough, he may or may not do it again. Small consolation to the family of the deceased but it was not premeditated.

  • valeriob

The kid is and always will be a criminal and a murderer. He has to live with that and I hope it haunts him every day for the rest of his numbered days.

Anything you say after the fact is just fluff and irrelevent. Like the points on Whos Line.

  • Think2wice

And he wanted was to make everyone in the neighborhood feel as bad as he does.

  • 5borough

He was about to get his life together,

He was going back to school next week,

He was starting a new job Monday,

He was getting back together with his babymama,

    He helps me carry groceries,

and the rest of the usual script.

I wonder if it makes the people on this website feel really good about themselves to be such tough badasses on the comments section (especially people like NannyState who make it their job to be as clever and witty as possible on EVERY. SINGLE. STORY.)

Yeah this kid took another persons life and that's fucked up and he deserves to be in jail but comments like "His father should've kept going"

    Oh man. So edgy!

Some of you psychopathic commenter's should get real. No one thinks you're funny.

    Cue:

Man he'll get his tight ass ripped apart in jail!

Kill him, his entire family, and every black person living infact. I HATE BLACK PEOPLE.

  • savior78

    theLtrain:

a lot of people would put this kid down because in new york, a lot of black and hispanic street youngsters like to intimidate people using fear. these kids can smell fear and they always take advantage--they know how to ruin a perfect evening. so all these commenters probably have been intimidated by such kids and they don't know how to stop their own fear. imagine having a perfect night with a friend/loved one in union square or lower east side, and then some random thugs intimidating you, calling you names and even wanting to get into fights with you?

many street kids have lots and lots of demons in their heads and they don't know that it's wrong to take advantage of "weaker" people.

well, for me, i let god handle it. i love karma.

  • NannyState

Where's my compassion for this punk? Oh yeah, Sadie Mitchell was planning to bake it in her little kitchen the next day. He suffered horribly as a young child and now he's made others suffer horribly. After a few years in prison he'll probably wish he hadn't survived that ghastly scene too. But if it makes you feel better, go hug a thug.

  • Dead Himmler

Dude you must have major issues.

  • Peter

Yes, but was he a good student?

He's graduating high school a year early with all A's in advance placement courses, scored a perfect 2400 on the SAT's, and has been accepted at Cal Tech to study astrophysics.

  • NannyState

His father should have kept going.

  • silver

    +1

When I heard they caught someone, the first thing I said to myself was, "Please don't let it be a Mets fan".

  • shovel

When this happened I immediately wondered about the worthless piece of shit responsible. I have to admit I wasn't prepared for the absolutely dead expression in this kid's eyes (far beyond the usual in most perps when caught). Even through the tv it was really unsettling. I'm not downplaying his heartbreaking actions, but at least he was caught for idiotically shooting at nothing rather than later for intentionally killing more than one person.

What do you do with someone like this who seems beyond any rehabilitation to begin with?

  • marcasm

I agree. What do you do with these people ? There are many more just like him out there. Sadly, they will eventually cause harm to someone, most likely innocent people.

  • Bernie Madoff-Goetz

Penal colonies. Just find a nice, big island for these turds and airdrop food each day. Let them create their own society separate from ours.

  • Spirit of 76

Snake? Snake Plissken? Is that you?

  • militza

oh of course he "had a rough life." a lot of people do but you don't see them messing up and hitting 92 year-old woman with stray bullets. he should explore the concept of free will while he's in jail.

  • freddynyc

I would think that young blood like him would command at least two packs of cigarettes in the shower room. Knowing this actually makes me feel sorry for him...

  • It is manslaughter, but did he think the bullet would just bounce off a wall and be forgotten about?

  • henryhamilton

This will drop to manslaughter eventually. Things need to cool down first, but this is manslaughter. You don't have to like it.

  • douchebag5000

    ever hear of felony murder?

  • hunter.blatherer

    It's about to get rougher.

  • Tar_Baby

Yes, but was he a good student?

  • longacre

Waiting for the "he wants to be a police officer" line.

  • David

Got to love that second amendment.

His life was over anyway. Mets fan.

  • The Edge

This has nothing to do with the 2nd amendment.
