Last Night's Action: Yanks Have More Work To Do

  • Angels 7 Yankees 6: The Yankees overcame a miserable start by A.J. Burnett only to have their bullpen give the game away. New York put the first two runners on in the first, but failed to score while the Angels jumped all over A.J. Burnett for four runs in their half of the inning. And that’s exactly where things remained until the seventh. With two outs, Mark Teixeira delivered a bases-loaded double to clear the bases and put the Yankees on the board. A-Rod was intentionally walked and Hideki Matsui followed with a single to tie the game. Robinson Cano followed with a triple to put New York up 6-4.

But, Joe Girardi decided to stick with Burnett in the bottom of the inning and he put the first two runners on before being lifted for Damaso Marte. Marte got an out on a sacrifice bunt and then he gave up a run on a ground out. Girardi went to Phil Hughes with the Yankees clinging to a one-run lead and Hughes imploded. Hughes allowed a walk and two singles to give the Angels a 7-6 lead.

New York loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, but Nick Swisher popped out and now the series will return to New York with Game 6 on Saturday.

  • Devils 4 Rangers 2: New Jersey dominated a sloppy Rangers club in the first period and built a 2-0 lead, but New York responded and tied things up in the second period. Things stayed that way until Dainius Zubrus scored on a strangely bouncing puck to put the Devils up for good. Zach Parise added an empty-netter, his second of the night, to complete the scoring.
  • Montreal 5 Islanders 1: Montreal jumped out to a 3-0 lead and added two more after Josh Bailey’s shorthanded goal to blow the Islanders out. Martin Biron faced 43 shots in the loss.

Thank you once again media, for criticizing a perfectly good coach, a coach that might i add GOT US THIS FAR, and all of a sudden you wanna say he changes pitchers too much and waaaaaah waaah waaah, i HOPE you're happy! Learn to leave well enough alone or in this case great enough alone.

The Yankees got this far not because of Girardi, but the tons of talent they have. This is not something new, the media has been all over Girardi all season long with the bullpen.

I'm going to go with "just making it to the ALCS is not 'well enough,'" and if he keeps making moves like these (I'm still pissed off that he pulled Robertson the other night), then there's no WS and no championship. Fuck not winning when you should--this series should be over.

And one more thing, is Toronto still interested in Joba?

It's because this and the Robertson incident made NO sense whatsoever.

Was that the Yankees or the Mets?

Let's hear it for Nick Swisher. Great series so far, Nick.

Ease off on Nick Swisher. He's an all or nothing type of hitter. That's his style and it's not going to change.

At least Steve Somers will get some sarcastic yucks out of this on the FAN tonight.

Girardi manages like the lightweight player he used to be.

Girardi is blessed to have a mostly young bullpen.
So it makes no sense to replace X with Y if there's a lead, X's retired every batter he faced and can pitch a couple of more innings. Building a bridge to Mariano is overdone considering the number of times the games went into extra innings.
