This video is the greatest demonstration of someone "flipping it" on an adversary that we've seen in some time. Long Island convenience store and gas-station clerk Mustapha Yakupoglu was closing up at midnight Wednesday night when two masked men burst in and pointed a shotgun at his neck, demanding money. But Yakupoglu, who's been robbed twice before, wasn't having it. Check out this deft maneuver, caught by a surveillance camera:
Yakupoglu tells the Post that as the shotgun was pointed at his neck, "I reached down to my pocket and told them to relax like I was getting money." Then he grabbed it out of the assailant's hand and chased them out the door! "All I could see, it was a very big gun. This is the third time for me, but this time was different. I was not scared."
It's unclear why Yakupoglu—a Turkish immigrant who works 12 hours a day at the gas station, seven days a week, and lives alone in a small apartment near the station—risked his life to protect the cash register at a USA Gas Station, but this guy definitely deserves a raise.

There were two criminals in that video. One of them was clearly white -- his hands are visible in the video. The other criminal was black, judging also from his hands.

When did the Post start doing video news stories? I first saw one yesterday; this is the second I've seen. Both with voiceovers by people who obviously aren't pros. Which I guess is why they're working for a newspaper and not a TV station, but still it seems like they could find better talent.

Too many times employees at convenience stores, restaraunts, and stores have done the "safe" thing and complied with robbers just to be marched in the back and shot. If every attendant was armed, if every attendant fought back, armed robbery would be just a bad memory. It is well known that robbers seek and hit easy targets incapable of mounting resistance much like lions will go after the sick, old and very young wildebeest, but they rarely bother Hippos, Rhinos and Elephants, because even the young ones can cause them damage.

I think the real lesson here (besides don't be an idiot who tries to rob people at gunpoint) is not to point the barrel of long firearm that close to someone's chest. If the moron had been standing three feet back he wouldn't have lost his gun.

Exactly. He wasn't pointing the gun at the clerk, because he was too close to do so. The gun presented no threat at that moment, and the clerk had the presence of mind to recognize that. The gloves probably didn't help the bad guy either; they look like just loose cotton work gloves which might be fine to keep your fingerprints off something but don't help your grip.
It looks to me like he reflexively batted the gun away, & got lucky. Good for him. Newsflash! GUNS CAN BE FIRED FROM FAR AWAY. In fact, you could kind of say that it their whole point. Don't use them like a sword!

Too bad he didn't shoot the crooks after taking it away. I for one would not want to be on the wrong side of a Turk. Their ancestors were fierce & fearless warriors. This nonsense doesn't happen out here in pudunk Missouri, too many gas station attendants are armed. New York would have a lot less crime if they stopped infringing on citizens right to keep and BARE arms.

I find it silly why some people would think that this man disarmed these two crooks to protect the gas station. The mere fact of having a gun stuck in your face should be a clear indication that your life is ALREADY at risk. If someone sticks a gun in my face, not only will I take it away if I can, I am most probably already armed with my own pistol as I have a CCW permit, and I WILL shoot them. Armed robbery first and foremost is a threat to life and limb, property is secondary. This thought process of compliance with robbers equals safety is ludacrous and is based on an erroneous assumption that criminals are "only" interested in stealing the property at hand and the threat of violence is merely a means of obtaining the victims compliance. This line of thinking fails to recongnize the reality that many of these criminals are also engaged in violent crime outside of simple stick ups and most likely already have commited murder, and may enjoy the thrill of taking life. There exists a good probability the assailent is a sociopath or psychopath who derives pleasure from the control they exert over defenseless people and the act of killing them. Further on this point many of them may simple kill the attendant on duty to eliminate the witness as criminals tend to spend a lot of time in jail, and don't want to be caught and put back where they belong.
I think someone needs to add that this is a really really bad idea. If someone threatens your life over money, just hand it over! You can earn it back eventually. A shotgun blast to the neck and it's game over, with no quarters left!
