Paterson Believes Gay Marriage Bill Will Pass

Gov. Paterson, with Speaker Christine Quinn, at this past summer's Gay Pride Parade
At the Empire State Pride Agenda's fall dinner last night, Governor Paterson said that he thinks the gay marriage bill will pass, proclaiming that "as a result of a law we will pass in the New York Senate, already passed in the Assembly, and [gay marriage] will be signed by the governor, just in the next few weeks."

Earlier this week, Paterson announced he would put the bill in front of the Senate during next week's special session. He had proposed the bill back in April, and the Assembly passed it in in May, but the bill was placed on the back burner after the Senate coup. However, the Senate is notoriously split on the issue and Paterson doesn't have much juice to twist Senators' arms.

Alan Van Capelle, executive director of the Empire State Pride Agenda, implored the Senate to actually vote on the bill, "Senator John Sampson, you are the leader of the State Senate. Senator Tom Duane, you have told us on multiple occasions you have the votes to pass this bill. Give us the dignity, the rights and respect we deserve. Bring this bill to the floor for a debate and a vote."

Why are you paging me? I agree that it will pass and I support marriage equality. It is Christine Quinn who has sold out the LGBT community since she hasn't pass one LGBT bill in the city council.

I think he's right & it is about freaking time that the Empire State got on board. Seriously, we're letting ourselves get beat by stuff like Iowa on this issue? Get it in gear, New York!

the difference is iowa did it through a state supreme court decree and that is not at all a litmus test of public opinion. NYS is attempting to do it through legislation which much more difficult because, in theory, legislators have to vote with their constituents in mind and it's a large state with distinct cultural divides on this issue.

"Cultural Divide" is such a polite way of saying bigotry!

I am glad it will pass not only for equality but also Christine Quinn can't use this as her platform to collect money and gather votes when she has not pass ONE LGBT bill in the city council. n public, Christine Quinn waves a rainbow flag at gay pride events and pumps her fists in the air at marriage rallies. In fact, she leverages her sexual orientation at every turn, except when she’s being exposed for corruption. In private, she works against us when it serves her politically. Quinn is no icon; she is a detriment to the LGBT community:

1. In 2008, Christine Quinn was virtually silent when dozens of middle-aged gay men in her district were being falsely arrested for prostitution. She only called a meeting when the victims threatened to hold a protest at the Mayor’s house, a move that would embarrass her. And she didn’t even bother to show up. Why didn’t she help? It was more politically expedient for her to ignore the gay victims than to speak out against the NYPD’s vice squad. This was an alarmingly weak response from someone who is gay, former head of the Anti-Violence Project and Speaker of the City Council.

2. Christine Quinn refused to endorse even one LGBT candidate for NYC Council in the recent election (http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/archives/2009/09/barrett_16.php). Thankfully, capable gay candidates did win, in spite of the fact that she worked against them because it suited her politically.

3. Christine Quinn rubber stamped an NYPD rule (with no public debate) making it illegal for groups of 50 or more to assemble in public without a permit? Freedom of assembly is vitally important to the LGBT community and is a constitutional right that helped put her into power in the first place.

4. Not one LGBT bill has been introduced at City Hall since Quinn became Speaker.

Christine Quinn has turned her back on the LGBT community time and again to advance her political career:

Gay people are free to marry someone of the opposite sex just the same as straight people are. Maybe marriage as it's been defined for thousands of years doesn't suit every lifestyle but to claim inequality is intellectually dishonest. The entire debate is based on a false premise.

You're right, ides. This debate is based on a false premise. But that false premise is that there is anything special or sacred about the form of marriage currently practiced by the majority of Americans. Any anthropologist can tell you there are a thousand different forms of marriage. And if you think marriage worked the same way thousands of years ago as it does now, you're an even bigger idiot than I thought. There is absolutely no moral, legal or ethical reason not to allow gays to marry. Do I really need to go down the list of reasons why marriage isn't "sacred" again? It's a very long list and my carpal tunnel's acting up.

you know what else is based on a false premise? religion. the institution of fools that seeks to prevent two consenting adults from marrying one another.

I'd try to reply, but Marmot already schooled you.
