East Village Vehicle Collision Leaves One Woman Dead

102309crash.jpg

An East Village resident sent us these photos of the aftermath of a horrific automobile crash that happened early this morning, at First Avenue and Fourth Street. An NYPD spokesman tells us that according to a "preliminary report," a 55-year-old black female was killed after a delivery van and minivan collided. Apparently, the minivan was so totaled that EMS had to cut the top off to get inside. The spokesman said there were no other injuries (which seems hard to believe) and no one was charged (which seems typical). Streetsblog hears an "unconfirmed" report that "this was a T-bone collision in which the minivan ran the light."

That was a minivan? I thought it was a car from the pic!

Don't you see three rows of seats?

That's a minivan? Damn.

I think any accident that results in serious injury or loss of life should end one way: drivers are arrested and put before a judge. No one is allowed to get into their car and drive off, cars are impounded and the judge will determine if a criminal trial/investigation should be undertaken.

After all, if I kill someone with a knife, and the cops find me standing at the scene of the crime covered in blood with the knife in my hand, am I going to get to walk away? No, I get arrested. Knife, gun, or car - it shouldn't matter.

Do you fail to grasp the notion of an accident? Knife, gun, or car shouldn't matter? I really think it should. Namely because it is incredibly difficult to accidentally stab someone to death with a knife. And if it truly was an accident - you were holding a knife preparing to cut your cake when your party guest tripped on the carpeting and fell throat-first onto it - then you would face no charges after the police concluded their investigation.

Also, you are not brought before a judge unless charges are filed, though you can be arrested and/or brought in for questioning. Judges don't determine if a criminal investigation is warranted unless there has been no police investigation up to that point. A stabbing is immediately investigated. Deadly auto accidents are immediately investigated. If you didn't violate any laws in being a part of wreck that took a life, you will not and should not be charged with a crime. Accidents happen. Sometimes no one is at fault. Some times the dead party was at fault. I imagine it is pretty traumatic for any person to be involved in a deadly motor vehicle accident, and your prescription of immediate arrest and arraignment is psychotic, moronic, and cruel.

This wasn't an accident. Someone is at fault. Look at that minivan. The driver of the other car HAD TO BE speeding. There's no way the minivan would have been that crushed from someone going the speed limit.

How the fuck is this an accident? It's true that they didn't try to hit the woman on purpose, I'm sure, but you can't reasonably expect that no one is going to be on a street in New York City, no matter the hour.

People need to be held accountable for what they do with their cars. If you drive recklessly you have little regard for human life. And if your reckless driving results in injury or death, you should be charged.

Tell me why you think this is not so? I'm listening.

I wasn't talking specifically about what happened above, just as the person to whom I was replying was not: "any accident"

That's a minivan? Damn.

that poor woman who lost her life...

Walked by this accident this morning. It's the worst damage to a car I've ever seen. The van was surprisingly not that damaged. Poor woman.

I live on the block and heard this accident at 6:30 am this morning. The minivan screeched first, then was hit. FDNY and NYPD showed up fast, and FDNY did cut the entire roof and windshield off the van. First Ave was closed from Houston all the way to 6 Street. Worst accident in the area I've seen in 10 years. I wish the cops would crack down on speeders and red light runners more than anything else.

If you heard, and did not see, the accident as it occurred, how do you know it was the minivan and not the van that screeched? Even if the driver of the minivan slammed on the brakes while the driver of the van did not, the reason for that could've been that the minivan's driver realized (too late) that he was running a red light.

I'm not following you. Whether or not the minivan realized he was running the light, there were a long set of curved tire tracks on the street that ended where the minivan was sitting. They suggest he braked and swerved first before being hit. The crash happened after the screeching.

Biked by this on the way in this morning, was very creepy and somber, totally quiet, just a lot of photographers. Upsetting, to say the least.

One of them was on the phone and blew the light.
