Neighbors are outraged after a 92-year-old was fatally shot by an apparently stray bullet that entered her home on East 224th Street in the Williamsbridge section of the Bronx. According to the NY Times, "It was unclear whether Ms. Mitchell was the intended target, but the police said it appeared some youths had gotten into a fight on the street" before the 5:30 p.m. incident.

Mitchell was hit in the back; she called neighbors John and Mary Fields, who took her to the hospital, where she later died. John Fields told the Times that "he drove Ms. Mitchell, a devout Catholic, to a nearby convent every Thanksgiving, where she prepared food she had purchased for the homeless," while his wife said, “The nicest person you’d ever want to see. She helped everybody. I’m just destroyed."

Neighbors say that there were "kids" shooting outside—Daniel Palmer told the Post, "I've never seen so many kids on the block. I knew something was up. They were all carrying bats." He said to WCBS 2, "It's just crazy. Parents need to take control of their kids and know where they are. This has gotta change."
