Annual Gang Initiation Rumormongering

Bloods1009.jpg
Gang Initiation Day: Fact or Fiction?
It's so hard to keep up with Gang Initiation Day! Is it on Easter, or around Halloween, or both... or neither.

Cops are on alert again as the annual Halloween rumor settles upon us, which typically alerts the city of a Bloods-induced bloodbath that has potential new members slashing hundreds of innocent people. Of course, the NYPD notes that this is somewhat of an urban legend, and this type of gang bloodshed hasn't gone on since 1995.

The NYPD's spokesman, Paul Browne, told the Daily News: "There was an incident in 1995 that gave rise to this annual rumor but has not materialized since then. It's an annual rumor that has not had a basis in fact since." Last week the cops in New Jersey were also dealing with what was dubbed a "Red October" hoax, that warned people of a Bloods initiation calling for the killing of 140 women.

To play it safe, the city's boys in blue will up their presence should the Bloods try to turn the rumor into reality. The paper reports that this "increased attention is based on what police have heard from debriefed prisoners and others."

It's already begun. Near my school it was reported that a girl got slashed, and they told us to be careful. Every girl in our school went home together, or in big groups. It was really scary. They even had cops in the roofs keeping an eye out.

  • ladyjane

yea, lady got assaulted in bed-stuy last nite. the man was trying to slash...this ish is happening.

  • jebby

fo' realz? what were their names? i'd really like to know, because people dont seem to know that roumers are spread all the time, just to scare people. tell me their names, show me a police report, go on a news website and go to the archives, and SHOW ME! until then, it DID NOT happen.

  • Yoshi

On the real, i didnt want to believe it either until my son came home from school and told me that one of his close school friends were related to some of the people who are doing this,, that was enough for me!

  • theLtrain

It's real. Theres no point in luring the more naive readers of this blog into a false sense of security.

Yes it's exaggerated (like most anything else) but it's real.

  • hotstepper

    don't snitch, blood.

  • Wza

NYPD is the biggest gang in the city.

ps..Chicago gangs are a lot worse than NY or LA.

  • felixthecatSUX

F Chicago. Not even a city.

  • JacqueMehoff

the city's boys in blue would be the crips, no?

  • eyekantspel

Of course, the NYPD notes that this is somewhat of an urban legend, and actual gang bloodshed hasn't gone down since 1995.

I think you mean gone up?

you sound like such a tourist with almost every article you write

That's because Jen Carlsen is a transplant; her out-of-state prose oozes from every pore.

    For instance, this nails-on-chalkboard excerpt:

the city's boys in blue will up their presence in an attempt to combat the boys in red

    ugh.

  • Nyctini11

I think "gone down" is correct here, as in What went down, or this and that is going down tonight at such and such a place. Not "gone down" as in statistics/numbers of crimes.

  • Kojak

Even though NY gangs do periodically kill each other & do stupid shit, they are far more docile than what they have in LA.

If they were ever to pull this type of shit, the NYPD would be handing out beat downs by the truckload.

you sound like such a tourist with almost every article you write and yet i continue to give you pageviews. god. damn. it.
