If you were planning on ducking out of the office to watch Game 3 of the ALCS at a bar, you could go really hardcore by taking the train to the Bronx and watching the game at Yankee Stadium. After consulting with Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., the Yankees are opening the Stadium Field Level and Great Hall to the public to watch the broadcast of the game in Anaheim, which has a start time of 4:13 p.m. (EST) with Andy Pettitte pitching for the Bronx Bombers and Jared Weaver starting for the Angels.

Gates 4 and 6 will be open at 3:30 p.m. Hal Steinbrenner said, "We wanted to provide a place for our fans to come together to cheer for our team even if the game itself is taking place across the country. This is a way of saying thank you for their continued support.” Also, it's a way to make some money: The food and concession stands, as well as New York Yankees Steak and the Hard Rock Cafe will be open.

Stand in the great hall for 3+ hours? Or sit on a dirty floor?

  • jaycjay

I guess you could choose either one, if for some reason you didn't want to just sit in a field level seat.

    Stadium admission = $0

    12-ounce Coors Light = $9

Aww crap. The D train home will still be crowded even without a game.

FYI ... it's Jered Weaver, not the shitty brother, Jeff, who once pitched for the Yankees.

"Would the MLB really schedule a huge playoff game at a time when no person with a normal 9-5 job can watch it just to make ESPN happy?"

Uh... yes. They like every other pro sports league bow to the networks on scheduling.

In this case, though, it's a day game in LA -- 1 PM start. While those are more rare in the playoffs than they used to be (bowing again to the networks, who'd rather the games be in prime time) there are still a few afternoon games each post season.

  • Maybe they didn't want to go up against Monday NIght Football?

that was my thought too, but the phils-dodgers went up against sunday night football last night. Would the MLB really schedule a huge playoff game at a time when no person with a normal 9-5 job can watch it just to make ESPN happy?

It was scheduled at that time because that was the best they can do.

But the Phillies Dodgers game is up against MNF. It really makes no sense, scheduling the game in Philly to be the late game, while the one in LA is the early game.

once they reach the LCS round, they don't have the games go up against each other; yes, the Yankees have the afternoon game TODAY and it sucks for Yankees and Angels fans, but the Phillies and Dodgers played in the afternoon on Friday - coincidentally when they were in LA - and that sucked for Phillies and Dodgers fans.

  • mrguy

I'm still unclear why they scheduled the game at a time when the majority of both team's fans will still be at work and can't watch it.
