Subway Delays Expected After "Minor" 2 Train Derailment

Folks using the 1, 2 or 3 trains, start praying that NYC Transit is able to fix issues at Park Place by the evening rush. A reader had mentioned that a train derailed at Park Place earlier today and now the MTA's NYCT Service Alert page says:
"Due to a train with ongoing mechanical problems at the Park Place Station, 2 train service is running on the 5 line between the 149th Street-Grand Concourse Station and the Nevins Street Station in both directions.

Selected Flatbush Avenue-bound 2 trains are running between the Wakefield-241st Street Station and the 14th Street Station.

There are no 3 trains in both directions between the Times Square-42nd Street Station and the Nevins Street Station.

As an alternative, customers are advised to use nearby R and W trains at the City Hall Station or A and C trains at the Chambers Street Station."

And yes, also expect delays on the 1, 2, and 3.

According to CityRoom, "No passengers were injured when one wheel of a southbound No. 2 express train jumped the rail as the train entered the Park Place station in the financial district. No cause has been established, but a New York City Transit spokesman described the event as a minor incident. 'The customers probably really didn’t even notice,' the spokesman, Charles F. Seaton, said."

I was on this train this morning - the apparent derailment occured around 9:20AM or so. The stop was abrupt and felt unusual -- the train stopped cold. Not surprised when the first provided excuse was that somebody had pulled an emergency brake -- the stop felt like that. We never heard anything else about that, nor was a derailment ever described to us. Thank goodness the first door of the first car had already entered the station, because after 20-30 minutes the train never moved again and we were all ushered out that one door.

Damn that sucks. Consider yourself lucky. There is a sharp curve when the train leaves Park Place heading toward Chambers and trains usually go slow into the curve because of this exact reason I guess.

We were actually heading downtown, from Chambers to Park Place, but point taken -- the same curve probably still apllies. I forgot to mention that I remember thinking why the hell would anybody pull the brake when we were just stopped at Chambers -- Chambers and Park Place stations are like 100 feet apart, so what "emergency" could have occured in that short time?? Sure enough...

Wow—luckily you were all okay.

Heh. Kind of funny that he thinks people wouldn't notice that they were stuck on the train for 20+ minutes and then had to exit through a single platformed door.

Really speaks to the shitty quality of our subway system. Privatize parts of this motherfucker already.

i'm sure the new MTA-5-I tax, that mayor bloomberg approved of, will fix all the MTA problems. for those who don't know the MTA tax is for self employed workers that use, or don't use, the MTA that are "...engaging in business within the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District". yet another way mayor bloomberg lines the pockets of his "friends". he is just lashing out at a group of people that are not organized to fight it. also how did this NOT make the evening news on any local channels? did somebody buy it out? even if he can buy a third term he is not getting my vote!!

I too was on that train, in the second car, which was the one that derailed. Far from not noticing what happened, those of us in the second car were nearly bounced out of our seats for at least half the distance from Chambers Street to Park Place. It felt as if the car might fall off the rails into the wall flanking the tracks. The "bucking bronco" effect was accompanied by loud sounds of metal being bent and otherwise being mangled. Several old geezers (like me) commented that in a lifetime of riding the subways we had never experienced anything remotely similar--either the bouncing or the sound of destruction.
