Author Says Greenhouse Club Owner Barred Blacks, Fatties

The author whose book release party at Varick Street nightclub Greenhouse was allegedly ruined by a racist door policy may file a lawsuit of her own. The "eco-friendly" club was recently hit with a $1 billion class action lawsuit, accusing the bouncer and owner of denying entry to approximately 100 people because of their ethnicity. Now author Teri Woods has come forward corroborate the allegations, and she says it wasn't just blacks who were kept out of her party.

Woods had planned the August 6th bash to celebrate the release of her new book Alibi, hiring a DJ and ordering bottles of French Ciroc Vodka for the invited guests. But she says her black guests were turned away, while several of the white attendees were allowed in. Woods tells the Daily News that when she arrived, "All of my friends and family were standing outside. I had really serious people out there: lawyers, doctors and people in the entertainment industry. I was embarrassed. I was just walking around in circles and in tears. They took my moment."

Woods also claims she has text messages from owner Barry Mullineaux reading, "Everybody looking at me like this ur people Barry???" and "I couldn't let in 300lb girls." Woods says, "I was clearly violated that night, and so were so many other people... All I know is it had something to do with 'your people' and 'fat.' There was nobody out there who was fat, and even if there was a fat person, who cares?" Mullineaux denies the charges, but if overweight people were turned way, it's probably just because they have a bigger carbon footprint.

That's hard to believe. I passed by there one Sunday around 10 am and they were letting in any brother who walked in.
One guy was so chic: he had on hospital green scrubs.

Well too fucking bad. Then don't try to be cool and have your party at a place with a door policy. They need to keep the image they want for the club - one of the appeals and downfalls of those places is they CHOOSE who they let in. Your fault for not sorting it out.
This has nothing to do with race - this has to do with how people look and dress and act.

Agreed. People who have parties at clubs like this, whether it be a book or a birthday, are selfish and dumb. Most likely they weren't let in because they were slobs, not because they were black.

Cut the shit.

It was her party, and they denied entrance to her guests, based on race and body size.

That was racism, pure and simple.

And you know it.

Futhermore, "your people" clearly does not mean "black people". When you say "your people" it means who you are with, or who is there on behalf of you. Give me a break.

Pansy,

White people have been using the term "You People" to refer to Blacks for the last 300 years or so - it's a racist code word that all African Americans clearly understand!

LOL, as if blacks didn't use the same words, many of them much worse words, to describe white people.

Who cares about any of this. Tempest in a teapot.

Easy for a White person like you to say!

People of good will care about racial discrimination - and, unless you are a racist yourself (which you may very well be) you should care too!

Greenhouse doesn't care about black people.

Ha, check out her website. The names of the books are classic.

I wish I could have been at the book signing of "the adventures of ghetto sam." Sounds like a real page turner.

Uhm, who the fuck is Teri Woods?...
Via forcing me to google her, this "self made urban-fiction millionaire" should have known better and planned ahead by closing the club for a private party on a Tuesday night.
PS LOLd at the fatties stuff.

"who the fuck is Teri Woods"? Don't ride the subway much huh? She's the publishing world's Dr. Zizmor.

So I see you're one of the racists too.

Terri Woods is one of the most prominent authors of urban fiction in the country.

If you haven't heard of her, that says a lot about how ignorant you are of African American culture.

If you had a few Black friends, you might be a little more aware.

I've never seen Star Wars or Star Trek either. Why so presumptuous?
You act like this woman has been writing books for decades and each new book is more anticipated than the previous.
I can't seem to find her name anywhere on a bestseller list... and her amazon reviews from her own loyal readers think they're horrible.
Why again should I know who this woman is? Can you also tell me why not knowing of her is so shocking?

Look at you... two days later coming out of hiding sniping at comments that no one will read again as if you got the last word in and called every single person out on their racist remarks... look at you feeling all self confident.
There's nothing worse than a LATE TROLL.

Don't feed the troll Valeriob. He is ignoramus.

I am reading this right? One billion dollars?

You are missing the point here. Class action.
Remember? You and I were standing in line that night. We were turned away, and we want justice!

No, we don't want justice, we just want the fucking money!

No blacks or fatties? The club owner must have some serious hang-ups about booty. Fuck 'em.

"I had really serious people out there: lawyers, doctors and people in the entertainment industry."

That last group of individuals is what probably did it. Lawyers? I'm sure they would enliven the party.

"I was just walking around in circles.." Please no little black sambo references.

"They took my moment." OK so they took your moment. Will one billion dollars make your hurt go away?

Unless she comes up with an ebonics-speaking Harry Potter, $1 billion will be exponentially more than whatever she makes writing her current drivel.

You've never even read one of her books - why do you call them 'drivel'?

I bet you probably feel that all books written by African Americans are "drivel" - just because they are written by a Black person.

And you cling to that ignorant half baked "opinion" simply because you are a racist, who hates Black people and everything we do.

She's not the one suing for a billion - though she probably does have grounds (for a more reasonable amount), given that she reserved the space as to promote a professional event and they couldn't even honor her guest list.

The billion-dollar suit was leveled by two women who were denied entry. And while it sounds absurdly high, remember that 1) it's a class-action suit, so a number of people can sign on and get a piece, and thus there needs to be enough to go around, and 2) this is the proposed amount, which for this nature of grievance is intended to be drastically high so that when the defendant tries to settle at a lower number, it will still be sizable.

"Here's a quarter, why don't you go downtown and have a rat gnaw that thing off your face"

The more likely scenario is that everything went according to plan (only let beautiful (white) people inside -- taken as a literal instruction) until the media found out what was going on, which was when Ms. Woods got heapin' mad and decided to sue in order save face. Either that or Ms. Woods is a horrific judge of character (letting the klan work the door at her party).

Either way, she facilitated this and her actions deserve at least a little bit more scrutiny.

And I was going to have my Kwanzaa party there this year! Should I cancel?

This comments page has been terrific for attracting this site's resident racist trolls.

Yeah, racist. I said it and I meant it. Roll your eyes all you want, but if you actually think this isn't an actionable offense and the claimants are just crying over spilled milk, your bias is showing.

Here are the plain, unvarnished facts: This was a professional event, where the author (or perhaps her PR/Publishing agents) reserved and paid for the space. Greenhouse has a reputation of being new, hip, different, cool-looking, or whatever; so it was an obvious choice for a glamorous venue. In addition to a number of other arrangements including refreshments, the author provided a guest list of VIPs to be granted entry. The guest list is a basic given of any club party, and is contractually adhered to by the venue.

So when the big night comes, a considerable number of her assigned guests are not permitted entry. And they all have something in common: being a minority, and/or overweight. That's already strong grounds for a discrimination suit. But moreover, it's a violation of the club's agreement with the author.

Throw in the fact that many were apparently doctors, lawyers, and people in the entertainment industry, and you could easily assume that their barring from the club constitutes a pretty grave insult. These are people she works with, people who invest in her and provide contracts and counsel, and it looks like she couldn't even get them into her own party. That's insulting, and reflects terribly on her professional standing.

If it's all true, it's a huge fuck-up on the part of the club. And given that the evidence is showing a clear prejudice against minorities, their discrimination deserves legal retribution. But, you know, apparently Valeriob and Snoopy would rather Ms Woods shut up and stop greedily assuming that she's ever owed anything. As though she's just looking for a handout.

If you would be so kind as to point out my comment on this post that lead you to reference and label me as racist, that would be great.
Your comment is full of assumptions and holds no water. You spineless piece of shit. Yes, you, roll your eyes all you want, prick. (see how I used the 'reply' button there?)

Nah, I think AvenueHebrew has it on this one. You're just kind of gross.

Hah, wow. It's alarming how amusing your indignation is, Val. This is a new one for me, but I see now why you like to get your rocks off by trolling people. Apparently pissing off a stranger on the internet is kind of hilarious.

Anyway, your sentiments are all here for you and everyone to see. If you don't grasp that what you're saying is glib and dismissive towards a clear issue of discrimination, there's nothing I can do for you. I shouldn't have to do the work of quoting your own words back for you. Call me a "spineless shit" all you want, but at least I can comprehend my own belligerence.

Dude, you came out of nowhere and sniped me. I'll ask you again, where in this post do my comments dismiss this and all other cases of alleged racial prejudice or discrimination?

All of your comments on this blog have been negative towards something or someone. Take a reflective step back... you're always on attack mode whereas my comments are typically playful or at least contribute something based on facts, not emotions or assumptions.

Just look down below... FelixTheCat praises your comment which puts you in the straight jacket category. Fact.

Somebody explain 'equal treatment under the law' to this jacka---

Sorry, but AvenueHebrew is right: you are a racist dunce, as is Snoopy, and the sooner that you admit it, the better.

Valeriob, you are quite clearly a racist - your open contempt for Ms Woods and her literary work, and the fact that you condone racial discrimination by nightclubs.

So why not be honest about your racism?

Look, you hate Black people - I'm not sure why (ignorance, fear, stupidity - or maybe you just uncritically learned the racism of your parents) but gut up and just admit that you hate my race.

In your heart, you know I'm right!

I agree with pretty much everything AvenueHebrew said, and he/she makes a really good case for Teri Woods's lawsuit -- which, esp. after reading AH's analysis, seems entirely justified.
On the other hand, I'm not sure some of the "cry me a river and drown in it" posts are motivated by racism... as someone who's had my share of b.s. "industry functions" and the elitism and attitude that goes with them, I could see where someone being happy that this one blew up in a famous person's face is just a case of good ol' fashioned schnauzerfund or whatever the fuck it's called (you know, being happy when things go wrong for someone else).

Valeriob and Snoppy are the resident racists trolls on this site.

Who are you talking to? And who let you out of your 'special jacket'?

Avenue Hebrew,

Apparently, you're the only person here with basic reading comprehension skills, because you very nicely summarized the case.

As for the others - yes, you are right, they are a bunch of White supremacist bigots, who would be more at home over at stormfront.com or some other racist website.

If you have your event at a snobby place, expect the people working there to do their snobby best to keep the place snobby. I doubt seriously that people were turned away for being members of racial minorities. More than likely, given what we know about this lace as well as the track record of non-validity that many charges of "racism" have, the people turned away were turned away for being poorly dressed and/or poorly behaved.

Places with door policies like this are rarely worth it. They are overpriced and the staff treat people of all races like garbage. Who wants to stand outside while some asshole judges how much you spent on your clothes? That's not my idea of a good time.

Someday I will write a book and have my party somewhere better, like the Holland Bar or Rudy's.

Dude, why is it so important to you to pretend that this was not about race?

This was quite clearly an incident of racial discrimination - period.

That's funny, I pass by there everyday and there are always "colored" folks getting in. Hell, even the bouncers are "colored".

We had trouble sneaking Al Sharpton in last night. I kept telling the bouncer that he was indeed Richard Roundtree and that he wasn't feeling well because of the chemo.

"Colored"?

Are you serious?

Or are you a time traveler from a klan meeting in 1963 Mississippi?

Yes, because I am white.

You got me there.

'they took my moment'...soooo wait what is it that youre upset about, your 15mins or that black people and fatties were cockblocked at the door?
Maybe this free press (your motive) will generate much needed book sales?
Fail.

I seriously wonder when her movie is coming out. There is no reason this should be news. Its a promotion, just like the 'No God' thing

This is coming out because the owner of that club racially discriminated against her and her friends

What part of that don't you understand?

Obviously, if the author was in the club they weren't discriminating against her, race-wise. From what I can tell (and admittedly all I know if this is what I've read here & have seen on the news, which isn't an awful lot), the folks that were denied admission were denied because of their weight and/or their clothes. Which is fine with me because personally, I hate fatties and everything they stand for.

DISCLAIMER: Any humor in this post is unintentional. No animals were harmed in the writing of this post. I don't think any fat people were harmed but I can't be 100% sure.

Give me a break. Yes, it's possible that this was racially motivated, but highly unlikely. Others have said it: it's a snobby place, and they're going to let in the people they want.

IF she did in fact have a signed contract with her guestlist (which sounds kind of ridiculous) then there would be no issue, so I assume she did not.

The owners want to maintain the club's image. That means not letting in fat, ugly, sloppy, and poorly-dressed people, and usually men too. Don't confusion correlation with causation!

Reminds me of the outcry years ago when some club on Ave. B (Guernica maybe?) wouldn't let in two gay guys. The bouncer said "couples only". Newsflash - this is club-speak for "I'm not letting 2 guys in - come back with girls", but of course they made a big anti-gay deal out of it.

Get over it, and stop caring about the crappy elitist club. In all likelihood, your friends weren't let in because they were fat, ugly, male, or all 3. That's how the clubs do it, don't you know?

I would bet anything that there were attractive black people in the club that night.

I am a white male who read about Greenhouse; it sounded like a great place so I took a white female friend there after dinner, for her birthday .. we arrived around ten and were told to come back an hour later (by a large white bouncer); he would let us through then.
We came back and stood there like animals waiting .. the same bouncer looked us in the face and ignored us. When I reminded him it was he who personally told us to come back he told us to "be quiete and wait for him to decide who he would let in" .... we were so taken aback by his extremely rude behavior and broken promise (while girls dressed in close to nothing were guided past us, inside) that we left.
Obviously this club believes in being green but dropped the human part. Their behaviour is beyond rude and I can assure I will make it a point to tell everyone about this and will NEVER attempt to enter that place again.
SHAME ON YOU GREENHOUSE !!!
I prefer non-green and human, thank you!

who cares ?? shit shit shit
