On Friday, the Centers for Disease Control confirmed that 11 children died from the swine flu over the past week. This comes as manufacturing delays have resulted in less than 30 million swine flu vaccines being distributed by the end of this month—it was hoped that 40 million would be available. Now, the Post reports that the city is considering a way to make house calls for possible swine flu cases.
With city officials concerned about crowded emergency rooms, the Post says they "are contemplating a new protocol that would transfer callers who report influenza-like symptoms to a special hot line manned by light-duty paramedics and a doctor, said a source with knowledge of the talks. The medics would dispatch either a team of EMTs to evaluate patients in person, or possibly a specialized crew in an ambulette to avoid taking a regular ambulance out of service."
For more information about swine and seasonal flu, check out the government's Flu.gov site. And Rep. Anthony Weiner warned constituents about fake swine flu vaccines on the Internet—"There are some pharmacies online that are completely legitimate. But in many cases, they are simply scams." His staff found five online sites selling fake Tamiflu within 15 minutes of online searches.

Flu triage sounds like a good idea. Still, looks like we're seeing very little of this in NYC though...
--Most NYC physician offices have run out of, or have nearly run out of, seasonal flu vaccine in the injectable form. Some still have Flumist, which can only be given to healthy individuals age 2-49.
--Most NYC physician offices are still waiting for initial shipments of H1N1 flu vaccine. Calls to the vaccine initiative office at the DOH are not answered by a human being. Physicians waiting for their supplies of H1N1 vaccine must leave a message.
--25% or more of visits to primary care physician offices in the past 10 days are for ILI (Influenza-like illness).
I don't want to create a sense of panic, but we've got a problem here in River City.
The Atlanta article is good in putting the deaths into context. 11 US children in the past week, bringing the total this year to 86 children dead as a result of H1N1. Half of those children died in September and October alone. In the past 3 years, the flu kills anywhere from 46-88 children annually, so H1N1 is definitely going to surpass that number.
So much for this being a "normal" flu.
But, but... why would anybody want the vaccine? It's untested and dangerous! Just ask all of the "health care professionals" who refuse to take it and filed a lawsuit. But wait until they've finished their cigarettes first.
