Reports of Baby Born on L Train, Delaying Service

[UPDATE BELOW] For crying out loud, some lady had to go into labor on the subway during rush hour this morning, tying up service on the L line. This better be one cute baby. We've gotten multiple reports that the L is held up because of the delivery. One tipster tells us the woman actually delivered at the First Avenue L station, and a Twitter user reports that she gave birth between Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Another tweets, "Woman collapsed on the L train in front of me this AM in what appeared to be a seizure. I called the conductor to get help. Hope she is ok." And Red Cable chimes in, "Passed out pregnant woman @1ave. L train outta service. #MTA sux yet again. Lady I hope yer ok."

As a formality, we contacted NYC Transit for confirmation, since there's nothing on their Twitter yet. But we can certainly all agree that the baby should be named Elle if it's a girl and... El Tren if it's a boy. (Or maybe Elton?)

UPDATE: Here's the statement from NYC Transit, which suggests that the baby was not ultimately delivered on the L line: "Our Command Center tells me that at 9:22 a.m. a pregnant customer was removed from the 1st Avenue L station to Beth Israel Hospital."

It would greatly improve the experience if the MTA would clamp stirrups to the posts.

if i were pregnant, i would stay home.

Gothamist continues to waste space with stories about rude drivers in NYC but they fail to mention the real problem of annoying women having babies on subways. It's always the women too, you never see men delaying a whole train to have a baby.

Seriously. What, do we have to start handing out Imodium at the turnstyles?

  • ANGRYGOD11

Ticket that baby for not swiping his Metrocard.

    No free transfer for you!

How tragic everyone was inconvenienced by the arrival of a newborn. Save the outrage for the TWU when they cry like newborns over their raises being held up...

HOW is MTA to blame for a woman having a baby on a train. would they prefer to just continue normal service and have people stand in afterbirth? i'm ok with the wait while they take the train out of commision.

My morning commute on the F train was f'd up because of a water problem somewhere that caused the geniuses of the MTA to turn the F train into a G! But we were welcome to wait on the platform and take the next F for some reason. Made no sense whatsoever.

  • ckl

That's happened to me twice this month. And no, it seems to make no sense, unless it's the cars themselves that are having the problems. But even that doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.

The subway is more commonly associated with the other end of the human lifespan.

My train was delayed because some dude in his 20s passed out. Yes he was all hipster looking. He was so hung over he just started to dry heave and then collapsed, right in front of me. f-ing nasty

As well as kids can we ban alcohol or at least people in their 20s who can't handle their drink. While we are at it let's take out cars, jay walkers, cops, bloomberg etal, con-ed, the MTA board, food vendors with carts that smell, horse carriages, pedi cabs, electicity, running water. hell let's just shut this town down Escape from NY style.

super pregnant women and babies in strollers with that dirty clear plastic rain protector thing in the subway doesn't sit well with me. subways are GROSS! germs everywhere, people coughing, congestion, loud noises, people cursing, dirty and smelly homeless people (some with bed bugs crawling on them). why would anyone want to subject something so precious as a new life to such a gross environment. if i ever have kids, they're not seeing the subway system until they're about 14 years old. lol.

  • ckl

I would expect homeless people would be less likely to be carrying bedbugs than your average commuter. lol.

  • Steven

Tell that to the cyclists and lets ban cars throughout NYC here on Gothamist. I would never let the mother on my child ride the subway - more so not during rush hour.
