El Diario Endorses Thompson, Compares Bloomberg To Chavez

2009_10_bloomchaz.jpg Yesterday, the city's largest Spanish newspaper, El Diario, endorsed City Comptroller Bill Thompson for Mayor. In its front page editorial, it says, "After a decade misspent lionizing the rich and their excesses, too many New Yorkers are paying the price for the decisions made in Washington, on Wall Street and in City Hall. What New York City needs is an executive with a balanced perspective towards development and growth, where families most in need are a high priority. This leader is Bill Thompson."

The paper also took Bloomberg to task for not listening to community concerns, like in "South Bronx, where residents feel that the new Yankee Stadium that his representatives so passionately defended left neighborhoods with a raw deal, to Brooklyn, where 40 black, Hispanic and Jewish organizations have been shut out of his administration’s development process for the Broadway Triangle site," and for extending term limits: "All of this is not simply slick scheming—it is a gross abuse of power. Even Venezuela's President Hugo Chávez conducted a plebiscite on his extended stay in power. New Yorkers were not even given that chance." Ouch!

The NY Times reports, "It was an unexpectedly sharp rebuke from the newspaper, and it seemed to catch the Bloomberg campaign off guard." The mayor's campaign had apparently hoped to win the endorsement, though the paper traditionally backs the Democratic candidate.

your pride is directly linked to how much someone agrees with you.

Bloomberg is like Chavez except that me made his money legally.

How do you know he made his money legally? Don't drink the kool aid. Bloomberg became the richest man in the city with all those no-bid contracts to his friends and families.

I not voting for Bloomie, but he did make his fortune legally and intelligently.
Bloomberg Financial is one of the top world providers of financial news, data and analysis for nearly 30 years. Just providing those services to only local financial firms would make him very rich.

Yes, I also use his terminal but he became the richest man in the city after becoming mayor and there are no transparencies or audits of ALL his NO-BID contracts especially the BOARD of ED contracts.

Bloomie was already one of the richest men in NYC when he was elected. But, his fortune wasn't based on real estate and other very recently devalued assets. His empire expanded into mass media and doing much better since his 2001 election.
Bloomie is a very hands-on manager. This is the main reason I blame him for city mismanagement. But, he's not involved with the operations of his firm. It's not possible, even if he never sleeps.

Bloomberg prodded the state to veto a bill that would give Albany more oversight and review of contracts at 1 million or more. People are misled that this man has a successful firm and won't want to steal. However Bloomberg WANTS MORE AND MORE MONEY. That what he is ALL ABOUT. that is why he is now the RICHEST MAN in the city after becoming mayor while the CITY has LOST MORE MONEY than ever.

Bloomie is no different from any local politician in not wanting state oversight.
Doesn't mean he's corrupt.
He's just not crazy about someone beyond his control looking for dirt.

I don't care what kind of puerto rican you are, get out there and vote against bloomberg.

YES!!! been saying it all along.

finally, they see the light.
unlike the NY Times and Daily News.
it was funny seeing joyce purnick squirm a bit when she saw her fellow journalists going against the grain after the NY1 debate.

So much for all those Spanish lessons, eh Mayor Mike?

Nice to see a newspaper with some cajones.

Since when did Bloomberg give anyone cheap heating oil?
