The downstairs firetrap at Greenhouse, with (typical!) not a single black person in sight. (Katie Sokoler/Gothamist)
The West Soho nightclub Greenhouse has a notoriously tough door policy, and is renowned for excluding throngs of hopefuls from the club's bi-level douchetivities inside. So it's no shocker that two black women interpreted their rejection by the club's door bitch as racist. Kashan Robinson and Maria Sicard are suing Greenhouse; they say they were two of about 100 people who were denied entry to a Teri Woods book party because of their race.
According to court papers obtained by the Post, Robinson, Sicard and others on the guest list were kept outside the Varick Street nightspot while white patrons were "allowed entry into the un-crowded club." Their lawyer tells the tabloid, "As far as I know, everyone who was on [Woods's] guest list was not allowed in." In exchange for their pain and suffering over not getting into Greenhouse, the plaintiffs want one billion dollars, which is pretty much what you'd have to pay us to go back to that hellhole.

why can't these people who are suing figure out that there is a difference between simply being a different color or "race", and being a ghetto gross girls who people don't want to party with. your "race" is not the problem. do you think if a classy, beautiful black woman wanted to go in they would tell her no? no. it's not about that. complain that nightclub doors are superficial or whatever but your percieved unnatractiveness is likely not a racism issue.
Maybe I missed something, but where were you able to determine that these women were "ghetto gross" girls?
Yes, the amount is ridiculous. Still, there is an interesting aspect to this whole thing which is the question of how one really determines whether a pattern of illegal discrimination exists in a place with subjective standards. It's akin to the "cultural fit" argument that some companies are fond of using in denying employment to an otherwise qualified individual of any race. One cannot dispute "fit" because it's so difficult to define.
And how can you prove that they aren't attitudinal ghetto ball breakers without manners? Cuts both ways.
I never made a judgment about them either way, so the converse is not necessarily relevant as a critique here.
We don't know if they are ghetto fabulous or actually just normal, non-scum, but what we do know is that fancy bars and nightclubs exist because there is a market for people looking for pretentious things to do.
You can't want to go somewhere because it's a pretentious club and then bitch about how they act like they're too cool to let you in. Your presence there in the first place indicates that you are buying into the whole scene, including the risk of being rejected for not being up to their BS standards. Yea I get there was a book party and maybe you were there for that more than the club, but it's still a book party at a pretentious club.
It's possible race was a factor after all is said and done, but so are height, beauty, overall looks, cleavage, money, status, etc..., so I don't see why being rejected for ethnicity is somehow more offensive than any of the other pretentious requisites.
i determined that because they didn't let them in.
One beeeeelion dollars. Really. With a 'B'.

"The downstairs firetrap at Greenhouse, with (typical!) not a single black person in sight""
First I serious'd. Then I LOLed!
here's the standard reply from the club,
we're not racists, our doorman is Black.
Alright, let's assume they were racists. A billion dollars? Really?
Was their rejection so harsh it severed the plaintiffs' legs or killed their family or something?
Forget the club, this lawsuit needs to be brought against the eco- movement as a whole.
ORGANIC!
Considering Teri Woods herself appears to be black, doesn't make much sense they would keep her whole guest list out of the place, for HER book party. Now if you're not dressed to their standards, or have "the look" they want in there, that's a different story but, this is NY and everyone knows this about clubs already.
Yeah, that seems like a slight *ahem* weakness in the case. I took a look at Ms. Woods's website and bio. She's got a bit of a hardscrabble background. She's been compared to Iceberg Slim. Based on her bio, I think she's more like a Too Short of pulp fiction. Her stories seem to actually profile the "ghetto" lifestyle, which would make it a bit ironic if the women were in fact, "ghetto gross girls" and denied entry based on appearance as such.
fools.
They let in brothers with no problem.
And they really love those Asian girls. Buy them champagne all the time. So, who's racist?
More raci$t freeloader$ looking for a $ettlement.
Clubs cater to certain clientele and they can let in or boot out whoever they want.
I have been in the NYC club scene for about 3 years, as a promotional director to a basic promoter. Bottom line any business is able to refuse service to anyone. I'm pretty sure they were over weight, or just weren't dressed properly. It's sad that people set themselves up for disappointment when attempting to gain entry to such exclusive venue's. If they are suing Greenhouse, they should go and dress the same and try to get into 1Oak or the Box, I'm sure lawsuits would be flying shortly after just because they play the race card. You could be purple, if your hot your in! If your not, keep walking, basic club etiquette.
I've been to Greenhouse plenty of times - Partied with all shapes, colors and ethnicities... They might not want a certain type of person in there, but they are not at all racist.
I'm sure they can find plenty of "white" people that didn't get in that same night
And I'm sure they were all from New Jersey.
racial issue oh please...I am surprised that they did not have plan b and pull "slip and fall" in front of the club... there's a reason why high end venues have standards...if i want to spend 1k for a night i would expect a beautiful crowd not a book club of some kind
I think anything racial played a small factor but the most part it was probably more of a 'class' or 'exclusive' sort of thing.
They would have denied a tall blonded blue eye man if he had a midwestern accent and was wearing a pop collar A&E polo shirt....would that be considered 'racist' too?
These sorts of establishments are cater ro a certain clientele (mostly the creative class and the fashionistas etc.).
It's all about the look.
Take your BS lawsuit and get the fuck out of here.
I wouldn;t want to party with slimebag that would sue for 1 billion of BS like this.
Wow, sounds like the majority of posters are racially biased, if you ask me. Is this attitude typical of New York City? Regardless if they were 300lbs or not, they had a right to be there, and this lame "eco" nightspot should be sued for discrimination. A billion dollars sounds absurd, I do agree with that. I'd never want to spend money in a club full of pretentious hipsters, anyway. There are TONS of clubs in Manhattan that cater to mixed crowds and play all types of music. Don't know what she was thinking.
Well I have been to greenhouse twice and both times i did not even have to wait on line and i'm black but i also weigh 115 and i'm 5"10...when i was there the second time the bouncer didnt want any of the white girls on line to get in...looked like he just thought they were fugly...i can tell you one thing they dont want ugly girls drinking for free or taking up any space in there
Sweety, I know you *tried* to sound cute and convincing, but nobody in their right mind would find someone who is 5'10/115 hot. That sounds absolutely gross. I'll bet you look like death on heels! Stop trying to make yourself sound better than you actually look by downplaying the white chicks.
