Brooklyn Banks Skate Park Closing

2009_10_brooklynbanks.jpg The Downtown Express reports that an area under the Brooklyn Bridge that's a popular skatepark called Brooklyn Banks (video) will probably be closing: "The city plans to use the internationally known Brooklyn Banks skate park as a staging area during the Brooklyn Bridge reconstruction, which is starting later this year and will last until 2014," according to the Parks Department. And the Department of Transportation "said the city would definitely need the space" at some point.

So maybe now they will open the williamsburg park that is completely done?

That's awful, the banks is such a legendary spot. You can't rebuild/replace something like that.

say goodbye to that place forever,
just like how they closed park row. it's going to be permanent.
the NYPD will take over.

NYPD sucks. I've had cops tell me I couldn't take pictures on the other side of the Brooklyn Bridge opposite the Banks. Uh, what? What's the big security risk? But I do think that this is being overblown. DOT will need the space for about four years. What's the big deal? They couldn't very well work on the bridge with people skating right next to it.

now I'm puzzled. we know the NYPD will re-claim that space for "security" reasons but I also think it's that giant monstrosity of a High rise that's being built yards away and they want to be ready for those new tenants. can't have skateboarders doing tick tacks and loitering.

NYC is really starting to suck.
