Union Square Once Again Hot Spot For 2 a.m. TV Sales

2009_10_bestbuy.jpg Since Best Buy is constantly looking to build on its existing culture of innovation and tailor its stores to the needs of local customers, the electronic retail powerhouse figures, "Heck, why not open a 24-hour spot down there in New York City's Union Square?" That's right, Best Buy's CEO Brian Dunn announced today that a 24-hour, 48,000 square-foot location (the old Circuit City) will open its doors at the corner of 14th Street and 4th Avenue, the heart of historic "please don't run into me with your skateboard" Union Square, on Nov. 13.

Dunn explained, "Today's consumers have hectic lifestyles that don't always conform to traditional retail hours. New York has long been known as the city that never sleeps." Ye —people are lying awake at night, wishing they had a Golden Girls DVD or an Epson scanner! (Sorry, Virgin Megastore.) Maybe people really are looking to shop after 10 p.m.—the 24-hour 5th Avenue Apple Store is doing well. And there's always the possibility of making a night of it with a bite to eat at the soon-to-come TGI Friday's.

The new location will be open each week from 8 a.m. on Monday through 12 a.m. on Sunday, re-opening for regular Sunday hours of 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Would would anyone want to pay almost 10% in sales tax? Shope online and save tons of money and it's even better if you know someone in CT or NJ who can order stuff tax free from Amazon and then give it to you.

Yes, dump the tax burden on other people!

Meh, not particularly thrilled about it, but who else cAN afford to lease that space?

This CEO didn't take into account the fact that the motto about NYC was coined not because New Yorkers were up all night wondering where in the world they could go by their electronic devices.

So what is going to in the old Virgin Mega store space?

Nordstroms. Or more specifically Nordstrom Rack, the discount version of the department store.

who doesn't love shopping for electronics at 1 a.m.....

One of the last remaining places to buy CDs and such. So with no more Virgin, this is fine with me.

There's still lots of kids in the area who'll be stoned at all times of the night and will be besides themselves with glee that they can go and spend more of mommy and daddy's money. To you Best Buy, I say "Huzzah!"

As someone who works in a creative field *and* tends to work late (and on deadlines), this actually sounds good to me. Now when I run out of ink, paper, etc at 3 am, I have somewhere to go.

Good News: There will be a bathroom 24/7.
Bad News: It will be disgusting 24/7.

I remember the old Crazy Eddie Store in the Village. They tried to close at 10PM and had to chase the customers out so the help could go home.
