Tinier Coke Cans Will Head to NYC In December

2009_10_minicoke.jpg Hey, people who have complained that 12-ounce cans of Coke are too ungainly—today's your day! The soft drink bottler has announced it's bringing mini 7.5-ounce Coke cans to NYC and Washington DC this December. Coca-Cola's North America Sparkling Beverages President Hendrik Steckhan said, "The Coca-Cola mini can is a great option for smaller thirst occasions and for calorie-conscious consumer. Our new sleek mini can supports the idea of moderation and offers people yet another way to enjoy their favorite Coca-Cola beverage."

The 7.5-ounce can has 90 calories, versus the usual 140 in a 12 ounce can. Clearly, Coke is gearing up for battle against the NYC's grotesque campaign against soda (involving graphic images of literal fat) and Governor Paterson's proposed obesity tax. The mini cans will roll out to the rest of the country in March. And don't worry, Sprite, Fanta Orange, Cherry Coca-Cola and Barq’s Root Beer fans—you'll get your tiny cans, too!

    Ummmmmm!

Cokes (and ciggies) together produce a very high rate of carcinoma of the bladder, yay!

WE LOVE PHOSPHORIC ACID burning through the bladder lining

the horrible surgeries through the Uretha.Stay away from it.

  • Fritzdecat

Despite being 2/3 the size of a standard can, it will probably cost nearly the same. Hey, Coke, how about changing back to cane sugar and ditching the high fructose corn syrup instead?

That is how they sell coke in Mexico

It is the only way that drink should be made

Then it should be only drunk once or twice a year

    preferable with Rum IMHO

  • grandzu

True calorie conscious consumers avoid the soda crap altogether.

  • SighR

Willing to bet these smaller cans will go for $1 and the regular cans will now go for $1.25.

  • petemac

Yes. It's the same strategy they used for the 1.5 liter bottles: Flood the store with them... quietly raise the prices of the original size... then slowly take away the smaller size. You are then left with a higher priced larger size with few complaints.

  • Mr. Shankly

Meh. I'll take the old glass bottles and real sugar.

  • JenChungsBaby

Do these corporate dorks ever take a step back and think about how their words sound to people who exist outside of their little carbonated beverage world?

  • Nyctini11

Obviously not or they would see all of us pointing and laughing at them.

  • HOTCUP

    wait, why NYC... and DC?

  • aspiringrapper

    1) Coke is disgusting. Pepsi forever.

    2) "Thirst occasions?" I hate these people.

    3) 8 oz versions of soft drinks have been available in supermarkets for several years now. This is not exactly an innovation.

  • Steven

Like others have said here, Coke should go use real cane sugar instead.

  • jonathan

In Japan they sell large, medium and small cans; all at the same price.

  • BklynsFinest

yeh, they do. (beat me to it)

  • juniper19

I'm so confused - they already sell 8oz 100 calorie cans.

  • sakebalboa

    ...thirst occasions...

  • emilydickinson

Coke probably spent 250k at an interactive agency to come up with 'Smaller Thirst Occasion'. Let the good time roll.

  • just saying

I've seen much smaller Coke cans in England. Can't remember exactly how small they were. Maybe about 4 oz.? They were definitely small. I wondered if they were intended for children.

  • mellow_fellow

Some sodas are already available in six-packs of six-ounce cans in supermarkets.

  • longacre

People will still use the same amount of rum with the smaller cans, causing people to get drunk more quickly, causing more accidents. Good job, government.

  • Snoopy

I never looked at the situation that way, but I think you're on to something. What is the Hispanic population's take on this?

  • JRod5417

What does that even mean?! Only Hispanic people drink rum? You, sir, are a f*cking idiot! That's my take on it.

  • inoyourider

Another shitty company going to raise prices for less product.

  • Snoopy

What this country really needs is to get the cigarette and condom vending machines back in the schools.

Look at all the tax revenue they will receive.

  • NannyState

So long as the cigarettes are flavored, I'm with you there.

  • ozik

I'm interested in the smaller cans, as I seldom enjoy a whole Coke. Canadian/European portions always seemed better than American, I just hope that the price reflects the smaller volume.

Part of me wonders if they'll try and get this offerend in school as a "half way to healthhy" sort of drink.

  • Rocknrope

Excellent. Looks like I can fit more of those in a pillowcase for when I need to get my beatdown on.

  • Guest

    RT

  • Snoopy

I guess it's a story of too little too late.

"Our new sleek mini can supports the idea of moderation..."

If those cans were available earlier that ex Calvin Klein model might still have a job.

  • thefacts

I miss the 7 oz. Buds. Time to bring them back.

  • Snoopy

Those 7 oz. Buds are still available, both in cans and in bottles.

  • Snoopy

And to think people actually believe the bullshit these senior management individuals throw out.

Some fool saw that Red Bull was making a ton of money selling their product in a skimpy can size so they said to themselves let's see if we can too.

"The public doesn't know shit. Look at our New Coke program and how well that worked."

Why don't they label the can as the New Slimmer Coke?

These people must really struggle when they get a "normal" size can of Fosters.

  • MacMuttonchops

I love that I have smaller thirst occasions.

  • hunter.blatherer

By this logic, dealers who cut their coke with baby powder are just looking out for their customers.

  • Ethan

High Fructose Corn Syrup makes me ill.

  • dadoc

Will be interesting to see the price/volume ratio.

Reminds me of the old Rheingold 7oz "nibs".

Who the heck drinks 7oz of beer?

  • Spirit of 76

Despite being 2/3 the size of a standard can, it will probably cost nearly the same. Hey, Coke, how about changing back to cane sugar and ditching the high fructose corn syrup instead?

  • hubcap

we'd have to end the cuba embargo to switch back to sugar. and killing the corn subsidies would help too

  • NannyState

I bet it'll cost more. In the world of retail, "healthier" = more expensive.

  • nivek

Probably not. I mean what goes into that corn syrup?

First you gotta grow that corn, and they use petrol-based fertilizers for the most part. Still gotta pump that shit out of the ground at some cost...and aren't we supposed to be getting off that drug? Next, you gotta convert all of that into syrup using lots of fun chemicals, and then filter it.

Oh, and by the way, you subsidized the price of corn via the farm bill.

    The conclusion? Fuck corn.

  • Mr Mel

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I remember a 6oz Coca Cola

(or was it Pepsi Cola) bottle being sold at the ballparks. They called it

"The Sportsman". It sold for the same price as the full size can or bottle.

  • What if I have a medium thirst occasion?
