Surveillance Video Shows Savage Hate Crime Beating, Second Suspect Arrested

A merchants' association in College Point, Queens recently installed a number of security cameras in the neighborhood to deter graffiti. Early Friday morning, one of those cameras captured in vivid detail the shocking assault on openly gay local Jack Price, 49, who was leaving a 24-hour deli. The attack left him in a medically induced coma with collapsed lungs, broken ribs, damaged spleen, and a metal plate in his jaw. This video shows how it happened, but be warned: It is extremely disturbing.

Price's family tells WABC he is now awake and alert, but he's still on a respirator. Last night the NYPD, U.S. marshals, and Norfolk police arrested the second suspect, Daniel Rodriguez, at a relatives home in Virginia. Charges are pending and the NYPD is in the process of returning him to New York. The other suspect, Daniel Aleman, 26, was arrested Sunday; he was arraigned yesterday on a charge of second-degree assault as a hate crime and faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

Queens DA Richard Brown told reporters yesterday, "As Americans, each of us is free to choose where and how we want to live our lives. An illustrative example of that freedom is clearly Queens County, the most culturally diverse county in the nation. Crimes of hate will never be tolerated here. When they do, regrettably, occur, they will be condemned in the strongest possible terms and those responsible will be brought to justice to answer for their actions."

And in a statement, Mayor Bloomberg said, "There can never be true justice for Jack Price, the victim of a vicious anti-gay attack early Thursday morning near his home in College Point. Thankfully though, both suspects in the case have now been apprehended. … Hate crimes like this one are particularly distasteful and won't be tolerated in our city."

Absolutely disgusting. Burn those two monsters.

i can't believe he stood up and walked 10 blocks home after that. could be dead.

hope the queens DA makes an example out of them.

Fucking animals. 15 years is too light. Just kill them now. It'll be better for everyone. Or, better yet...leave them in a room with some 'roided up West Village leather boys for a couple of hours.

HUMANS are the only specie that behaves this way. it is Fucking homophobic HUMANS.

Exactly. Animals kill to eat: Survival of the Fittest. Humans, are supposed to be the smarter race, murder for anything or nothing.

Wrong, and wrong (sexisicilian).

Other primates commit homicide - by which I mean killing their own. Dolphins too. Seems to be something that species with more advanced circuitry do, for whatever their reasons. Dolphins ostracize. Some primates have been known to kill for a mate, or will kill all the offspring of a rival.

But these guys? Whole other story. 15 years max? If that's all they can give 'em, they should do the whole 15, but damned if what I saw wasn't a hell of a lot more than 2nd degree assault. DA could probably push an attempted murder charge.

Only Humans are homophobic and not other species.

Of course the taxi driver did nothing.

I was thinking the same thing that jerk in the car didn't even stop.

Prison will help them finally uncover their closeted homosexuality which drove this vicious beating. Finally the natural rehabilitation system will work magic on these two young lads.

First we don't know if they are closeted homosexuals and yes jai is a punishment but we need humane education. Christine Quinn voted against HUMANE education resolution and she didn't push the Board of Ed to follow the ANTI-bullying program. This beating of this innocent man is a reflection of Bloomberg and Quinn's apathy towards humanity education in school and protecting children from bullying.

This beating of this innocent man is a reflection of Bloomberg and Quinn's apathy towards humanity education in school and protecting children from bullying. Ummm no— it is a reflection of the parents who raised these pieces of shit and the personal choices these savages have made in life. This crime should not be used as a platform to blame city government. What these cretins did to this poor man is heinous...

no this crime should be used to blame QUINN AND BLOOMBERG to PREVENT MORE OF THESE CRIMES. Don't expect all parents to know how to raise their children, society for its own sake should help teach them about HUMANITY AND COMPASSION. Quinn voted against HUMANE education in NYC and she HAS NOT PUSH the board of ED to follow the anti-bullying program which is STILL not in place after 7 years.

Expecting city government to enforce the teaching of compassion or humanity in the public school system is a losing proposition. These were adults in their 20s who took it upon themselves to nearly beat someone to death-based on their own prejudices. These prejudices normally are fostered at home. Quinn and Bloomberg's policies had nothing to do with this crime—no matter how you attempt to spin it. Why don't you join me and fellow commenters in wishing Mr. Price a recovery from his physical and emotional wounds?

"Why don't you join me and fellow commenters in wishing Mr. Price a recovery from his physical and emotional wounds?"
People like you don't want to do anything. You think calling these guys names and wishing Price a speedy recovery does ANYTHING. NO, it does nothing but make YOU feel better. BUT IT ISN'T ABOUT YOU. IF you want to do something then CALL QUINN AND make her vote for humane education and FORCE Board of Ed to implement ANTI-bullying legislation.

It is about me actually, which is why I am choosing to express my sentiments on the subject. I am angry by what happened to Mr. Price. I am angry at the perpetrators. Gothamist's comments section affords me the opportunity to express myself. Calling the mayor or the city council as you propose and blaming them for what happened is an absurd response to this crime. You have no concept of the causes I support or the actions I take. So please, insert your head back into your ass...

IT is you who has NO KNOWLEDGE of HOW Quinn and Bloomberg's policies has enabled such hate crimes since YOU probably never been to any of those hearings on HUMANE education and anti-bullying legislation. KEEP posing all your sentiments here since IT DOES NOTHING BUT makes you feel self-important. YOu should remove your head from your ass and LEARN more on how Quinn and Bloomberg's policies have disenfranchised the PEOPLE include homosexuals in NYC

Again, you have no idea what causes I am associated with. Yet you act like you do. Whatever the case, I will fight for the causes I believe in-choosing not to make a spectacle of myself here.

I don't care about you. damn, remove your head out of your ass. I stated how Quinn and Bloomberg's policies and lack of policies enable such crimes and you felt the need to tell me it was not an appropriate comment. My response is to fuck off now. If you don't want to do anything then fine but don't step on those that are actually fighting for humane education legislation and anti-bullying programs that will prevent some of these hate crimes. now go away.

Not stepping on you-you are free to do whatever you want. I disagree with you. A man was beaten within an inch of his life and you blame a lack of sensitivity training in the public school system. You are a fucking idiot. Fuck you and the horse you rode in on...

No fuck you since you are a total idiot who can see beyond his blinders. People like you are just as guilty as these guys since your ignorance feeds this corrupt system.

go feed the horses you fucking moron...

what an idiot. What a response. LOSER

Don't expect all parents to know how to raise their children?!?! Seriously?!?

If anything society SHOULD expect parents to know how to raise their children. If they didn't know what they were doing they never should have had kids in the first place. And if their kid was an accident you'd think they'd have sense enough to do the right thing and LEARN how to raise their kids properly. LaBlaming the city government for this is so ridiculous it's beyond laughable.

YOU are laughable because all you want to do is call them names and not prevent other crimes from happening. HOW ABOUT HAVING PROGRAMS in school to teach diversity and humanity. What is so Wrong about that? what a joke you really are. Please don't have any children.

I never met such IDIOTS IN my whole life. So if a child had the misfortune to have parents who are bigots then it is not society's role to expose the child to diversity and humanity????? WTF is wrong with you people.

Agreed, these sorts of crimes never happened before Bloomberg and Quinn were around. They certainly don't happen in other cities, where Bloomberg and Quinn are not in charge.

Yes so according to your logic, LET US NOT DO ANYTHING since it occurs in the past. REAL SMART!! Quinn is GAY but she fools the Gay community. She does nothing at all. why don't you speak with the transgender community that have been victims of many attacks even in the west village but QUINN has done NOTHING. Teaching young kids about humane education will prevent a lot of these crimes but I guess it is better to BLAME THE PARENTS AND NOT DO ANYTHING. IDIOTS. Go to the OUTPOCPAC meeting and hear how QUINN has turn her backs on so many of such victims that the NEWS didn't report on.
http://www.outpocpac.org/

Do you really think these two mongoloids who have probably never picked up a newspaper would have not beat this guy up if Quinn and Bloomberg had done something differently?

Do you think they're gonna be like "Hey, let's beat up that queer! Wait, oh shucks, they just passed a law against that, maybe we should just go home."

If they were taught in school about humanity and compassion then perhaps this wouldn't have happen.

Shut your mouth assclown. You are joke on this website.
No one takes you seriously.
You cause more damage to anything you associate yourself with by flapping your stupid fucking mouth in realistically neutered ramblings.

Do you understand what I am writing or do you need another 50 people to say it over and over again. Please leave this site, or at least stop commenting.

You're like that tard from 300. Stay the hell out of our awesomeness. This..is..GOTHAMISTTTTTT!

Valeriob, YOu are a peasant who makes lame jokes and calls everyone Nancy here. It is you that is the fool and YOU know it.

Listen here, Samantha. Reread my comment above for my response.

Schools don't make you losers...your family and upbringin do. Have you looked around at the people in this city.

TRASH.

Children aren't trash and when they are exposed to humane education then they do group up with compassion. Otherwise they end up as stupid and racist as some of these gothamist posters here.

Because everyone who doesn't agree with FelixTheCat2 is a racist.
JOKE. You are a JOKE.

user-pic

This is one of the most disturbing, disgusting things I've ever seen. Lock those 2 assholes up & throw away the key.

My prayers are with Jack Price. I hope that he heals physically. More than that, tho, I hope he's able to somehow process this so that he's not traumatized for the rest of his life.

"Hate crimes like this one are particularly distasteful."

I agree with Bloomberg. Savage beatings are so gauche.

user-pic

Wait, so is he in a medically-induced coma or awake and alert? This story says he's both.

He was, right after the attack, but now he's awake.

Execute them now, don't waste our tax dollars on any trials, prison time, etc.

These guys are the scum of the earth. Send them to the gallows or the chair (no lethal injection, they need to fear for the last moments of their existence).

Hate crime legislation is unconstitutional.

The perps should be commended for moving the beating away from off-stage right to square in front of the camera, all but guaranteeing their convictions.

"Hate crime", hmmm. Isn't all violent crime born out of hate?

No; some from desperation, some from sickness, some from desire, some jealousy, some calculation, some for sport, some for aesthetics.

They never release videos of straight men getting beat for no apparent reason other than they're men and we all know men like to fight.

Bloomberg needs a thesaurus. I'm not sure "distasteful" adequately describes the situation.

Wearing a brown belt with black shoes is distasteful. Gothamist commenters are, generally, distasteful.

This is repulsive.

What I find repulsive is how some commenters here are posting how horrible this crime is and yet don't support HUMANE EDUCATION and anti-bullying legislation since it is the parent's responsibility and/or it has occurred in the past. So I guess it is better for them not to do anything and just post their useless sentiments here. People like them are just as guilty as these 2 guys who attacked Mr. Price.

YEAH!

Send all these internet posters to jail for attempted murder!

Way to sound like a rational, thoughtful proponent for your position...sign me up!

learn to read, where did I state these commenter should go to jail????

so you think that people posting here are ALMOST as guilty as the guys that beat Mr. Price? Saying someone is just as guilty as 2 people that nearly beat someone to death means they should have the same fate, no?

learn how to get your point across without acting the fool!!!

@ Felixthetwat

What I find repulsive is your unbridled idiocy. Why don't you explain to us lesser intellects how exactly humane education and anti-bullying legislation will prevent all of these crimes, even though this isn't a place for you to spout off politically?

Oh, you can't? I wonder why. Maybe it's because you're having an emotional outburst, rather than a logical reaction to this video, as evidenced by your last sentence there.

In sum, shut your whiny, histrionic mouth.

if you can't understand how humane education can prevent such attacks then you are dumb as a dining room table and I have no wish to talk to furniture.

i think that poster was asking you to explain your position and humane education.

stop being so defensive and try to actually say something.

He doesn't want to know since he is reactionary and not preventative. I feel bad for Mr. Price but he was not the only one. I posted a link of Mr. Prince. a Very tragic case and the young man is permanently disabled and blames himself for the attack. There will be more of these cases because of Quinn. I wished Rush Limbaugh was the speaker because the community will act against him but not Quinn because she is gay. However her PROVEN records show how she only supports the Gay community in the media when such attacks happen but doesn't pass ANY legislation. And in regards to humane education, children should be taught compassion. I think it is more important than passing test scores. This is why society is so callous because children grow up with no empathy. NOT all children are lucky to have compassionate parents.

@felixthetwat

Yes, you're right. I'm the one who is stupid. If something is so axiomatic as you make this to be, you should be able to clearly and concisely state the cause and effect relationship using science not conjecture. You opted to call me furniture. Well played.

It is crazy to think that hate can be eradicated. A free country will always mean a hateful country. This may not be fair, or perfect, or admirable, but it is reality, and while we need not endorse it, we should not delude ourselves into thinking we can prevent it. -- Andrew Sullivan

I'm too scared to watch the video but will add my 2 cents anyway. I don't care about the human circumstances behind it (nature vs. nuture, etc.) all I know is it is disgusting. these people forfeit their right to freedom and should be thrown in jail or be punished severely.

Any confirmation yet of whether Aleman's father is really a CO as he purportedly claimed? Either way, his father is probably ashamed to have a son like him. On top of that, the lowest form of scum says things like, "My father is such and such." All it says to me is that the person is a zero himself and needs to rely on the reputation of relatives.

Jen, JDS, et. al.:
Why don't you put your journalistic skills to good use, and find an address where we can send letters of support/donations to the victim and his family. This is a news blog, serving the New York community, right? I'm sure a lot of the hostility on this board is just misplaced energy, from people frustrated by the injustice done to this guy.
To all you posters who are upset/sickened by what happened: why don't you turn your outrage into action, and send a letter of support, a get well card, a small financial contribution, or something? I know I will, if the Gothamist reporters are really all they claim to be, and post some info on how we can help.
Even if they don't, there's ways of finding out how to help. But hopefully the folks at Gothamist will step up and do the right thing by helping out here.

Not to make light of what is definitely a horrific event but as far as the security camera is concerned, that is a pretty nice composition.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/18207626/August-6-2009-Gay-City-News

There are been many attacks in Queens but did not gather media attention, Queens LGBT community had rallies calling for DASA (Dignity for All Students Act) but QUINN doesn't respond. She talks for the camera but behind the scenes she doesn't support legislation such as HUMANE Education and DASA. She even opposes HASA for people with HIV. The problem is that QUINN is gay and some of the LGBT are misled that she stands for them but she stands for herself. IF someone else was speaker and not gay then I bet there would be more outrage of the lack of legislation to protect the gay community. There will more such attacks until people realize how important legislation is and who really serve their BEST interests.

I agree with felixthecat that there should be more preventative legislation that mandates anti-bullying and diversity-oriented curriculum in schools. Some parents actually think they're doing right by their kids by encouraging homophobia because they feel it is morally wrong. They could be conscientious citizens and yet be unaware or indifferent that their homophobic attitudes/behaviors condone this violence.

As a parent myself I see my kid occasionally pick up attitudes/sayings that gall me, and it takes patience and discipline to help him see the other sides to his opinions without being totalitarian about it. Government should act as a societal version of conscientious parents: provide an education that looks at many sides to a dilemma, foster critical thinking. And finally, make it absolutely clear that violence on any level will not be tolerated.

Coward Animals. Say goodbye to at least a decade.

Drop dead you pathic turds.

PS: Quinn really bugs me. Please get that fat theif off TV, radio and the web unless she is in handcuffs.

genuinely criminal and potentially murderous acts. jail them for a long time.

"Distasteful". What's distasteful is that this victim will have to return home from the hospital to that same apartment in that same neighborhood and will probably end up going back into that same 24 hr deli to buy whatever. What is Bloomberg The Billionaire doing about that?

To watch this video is so disturbing and hurtful. It's shocking. The animals should be locked up in cages until they can wrangle these assholes family members. They should have to be forced to watch their loved ones be completely tortured.

Then these two monsters should be tortured for days until their heads are severed whikle they are still breathing.

I'm trying to keep the faith in this city. But trash like these two dicks walk the streets daily.

DEATH PENALTY TO CUNTS LIKE THIS>

Yeah, we get it, it's a horrific story. You sound like a savage though, go back to Salem with that shit.

They should set these two cretins on fire! Their crime is so heinous it makes me want to stoop to their level and beat them to a pulp. The DA should make an example of these two. NO BAIL! Life sentences.

Important points that never were discussed due to Felix (You don't have to put on the red light)'s monomaniacal histrionics:
1: The video clearly shows the victim attempting to flee, being beaten while helpless and left (in the street) in imminent peril (run over) of death. Whatever they seem to take from him in the vid, that adds robbery 1st, and this should be bumped to assault 1. Attempted murder seems to be out, as the perps left with the vic awake & mobile.
2: The video was obtained by cameras that so many would like to have disappear, as they represent an invasion of privacy.
3: The video will make the prosecution much easier, and will be VERY effective before a jury, regardless of the defense's predictable attempt to show provocation/self defense/whatever. The vic fled and was beaten while helpless.
4: Presence of cameras did not deter crime, but did provide valuable evidence for effective prosecution.
5: Cameras were placed to decrease "street art". Discuss.
6: Bias or not, the magnitude of the injuries and video-proven intent justify severe punishment. No plead-down (DA & PD can say "crime is down" if perps plea to lower charge).
7: If this guy was straight, no media coverage.

8: Felix is quite unbalanced, and I would NEVER support anything this nutjob would want taught to children.
Felix, before you advocate the government-mandated, taxpayer-funded moral curriculum to be imposed upon those who seek an education in NYC, please post your family group photo. Your twitchy diatribes continue to divert people from discussing important issues like video in the city, criminal justice, etc.

Just sayin'

Daddoc, I must have really touch a nerve with you since you can't miss any opportunity to insult me. Your inadequacies are quite evident.

I grew up a few blocks away from the incident and it chills me to the bone.

Anyone who is familiar with the area can agree that the problem stems from beyond the school system.

The only way to make a change is to react as a community. To idly stand by invites these hyenas to continue their vicious behavior. The only foreseeable way to stop College point from being a haven to criminals is to get involved on a personal level.

Is there a way a group of people to volunteer a few hours to kids like this so they know that violence doesn't lead to any rewards but retribution?

It makes me upset that this has been spun into a unilateral hate crime issue. The issue is ignorance.

Being the two were over 20, these people were being rewarded SOMEWHERE for being cavemen. Notice in the video that NO ONE conveniently heard it. A block away is a residential strip...someone heard it but not one did anything...

People are scared to open their mouths for fear that they'd be singled out and beaten up...Colege Point is known for gang activity.

If everyone stands up and provides a wake up call to these thugs, then they won't have the guts to raise a fist to anyone....How can we make this happen?

What did the 2 attackers say to the victim that deemed this a hate crime?

user-pic

"if you can't understand how humane education can prevent such attacks then you are dumb as a dining room table and I have no wish to talk to furniture."
this is awesome

A teacher can preach humane education from 9a-3pm in school but if the kid has somewhere to go outside of school where posturing gang behavior and violence is rewarded then what's the point of spending the money on humane education?

Both are quoted as saying things like "He don't hate nobody"...did they teach english in school? Yes. Did they learn? No. So how is teaching humane education going to help? And frankly, what about the school system suggests that it ISN'T teaching it. There are class animals, classes are ull of kids that you have to get along with--The problem is at HOME where attitudes are propagated that beating people is COOL. Oh yeah, violence and gangs are cool for ghetto culture...on THE STREETS

There isn't any humane education taught in schools And Quinn voted against it. And you are wrong. Young kids exposed to humane education do learn and actually teach their parents sometimes.

how do you know? Do you sit in the classes? How is it Quinn's responsibility to make sure someone learns a lesson? These people were in school before Quinn was in office...This has been a problem for years now...This is a culture problem that spans beyond school age.

You're telling me that people who take these classes ALWAYS do better? Areas with these classes DON'T have gangs? DON'T have crime? I'm saying lessons have to happen OUT of the classroom...maybe if you advocate for library programs, after school activities...or HEY that parents make sure their kids don't hang out on the streets with bad influences late at night...

You did not deal with the idea that these kids can't even grasp basic language...how are they going to handle higher level morality? these people are being taught to do the easy way...cheat in schooo...cheat other people...and beat those who are weak when you have back-up.

How do you know you're not taught humane education in school?

I'm not saying Quinn is AWESOME. i'm saying that throwing money at th e problem and blaming a low level government representative is being weak and not addressing the larger problem. Unfortunately, there are tons of Quins and even more Rodriguez's and Aleman's...this is more than a government plan can fix.

Also--It's not ALL the parents...Aleman admitted he participated because Rodriguez was doing it...it's young people who think that being accepted by a group is more important than doing the right thing. That's not always taught by parents or by teachers but by their peers....oh yeah GANG behavior or somewhere else that's advocating gang behavior...Gangs are against the system so having lessons in school aren't going to work for a group of people who reject all things that are lawful and consonant with the system..

how did they know he was a gays

i hope they're dead soon.

I agree with felixthecat. if we started teaching humane education instead of phys ed, there would be no hate crimes.

You know what, I never thought of it that way. I think that's the key -- eliminate phys ed. All that teaches a kid is to be aggressive. If you stimulate the children's sympathy, rather than their aggression, violence as we know it will cease...then global disarmament and we'll all live happily ever after. Sorry for being so obtuse before.

don't mock me, i was being serious. We can keep phys ed, as long as humane education comes first. we should maybe start the school day off with that. i cant wait for the future once we start implementing these programs.

I totally wasn't mocking. I too, believe the children are our future.

Yeah, hubcap, like they don't beat gays in California?

STFU, you useless troll and worry about the bankrupt state of California.
