Tent Of Tomorrow Is "Severely Deteriorated"

The NY State Pavilion on the grounds of the old World's Fair site in Flushing may have just been landmarked, but the Tent of Tomorrow is on the verge of becoming extinct (after all, it was endangered years ago). The Daily News has an update on the area after Queens News obtained a 99-page report through the Freedom of Information Act... and the future isn't looking very bright.

The Tent of Tomorrow is described as "severely deteriorated" with only quick and expensive efforts that can save it. "Stabilizing or preserving the space-age structure would cost between $20.3 million and $29 million, according to the engineering firm Robert Silman Associates, which was hired by the city to conduct the study. Demolition of the Tent of Tomorrow, as the pavilion's elliptical centerpiece was known, would run $9.7 million." But why not just save all that money and do more studies until it falls down on its own? Yep, the city is conducting a second study before deciding how to proceed. And by that time, the park may be referred to as the "valley of ashes" again, a term F. Scott Fitzgerald used to describe it in The Great Gatsby.

Just tear down all that ugly crap. That tent-thing, the dumb observation towers, and whatever else. Leave the UniSphere though.

Stop throwing tax dollars at this ugly junk.

my sentiments exactly. world's fair = dodo.

Every time I walk by this stuff, I wonder at the fact that this abomination still exists. It looks like it's from Soviet Russia. I agree about the unisphere though.

As a Queens resident, I resent that. Brooklyn's Eiffel Tower in Coney Island gets much loving from local pols. If Marty could restore the Parachute tower to its past glory, he would.

But Queens voters are notoriously apathetic. They reelected Helen Marshall. Just outside Queens' Borough Hall, an 80-year-old nude statue continues to crumble.

She left the statue to rot because it is allegedly misogynistic.

didn't gothamist report that the NYS pavilion received national landmark status in order to be able to apply for rehabilitation grants? am i mistaken?

and to all you naysayers, a lot of people (like myself) think this structure is cool as hell. the only reason it looks like crap, other than the fact that you may be an architectural prude, is because it's been neglected for decades.

the tent of tomorrow used to have this amazing transparent colored ceiling, but they had to take it down because it was falling apart. it also had a really cool gigantic road map of new york state (tile, i believe?) i hope they repair both.

in any case, the '64 world's fair was an incredible moment in this city's history. it's unfortunate that the other world's fair structures were only temporary, some of them were also pretty damn cool. it would be a shame to deny future generations the chance to observe and enjoy this unique building.

I love the Tent of Tomorrow and the other World's Fair structures in the park. It's a travesty that they have essentially been left to rot for the last forty years.

Having said that, from what the News says in their summary of the report, this one might unfortunately be past the point of no return. If the structure really is in such grim condition that the firm is saying that preservation might be "impossible," maybe it is a cue to salvage anything possible (such as the Texaco map), to say a sad goodbye, and to devote those funds and attention to other things in the park. Flushing Meadows Park could really use additional funds and attention for upkeep right now, and they could stop other structures from reaching this level of deterioration.

I haven't seen it yet. I'm still suck in the Kodak Pavillion.

Ha! 'stuck' ....or the other one.

tear it down and put in another soccer field

It was never the jewel of the fairgrounds! tear it down, already! We can't keep it all.

Can't keep it all? There's pretty much nothing left already. This NYS Pavilion and the Unisphere are basically all that's left out of the entire 64-65 World's Fair.
