Police Search For 2nd Hate Crime Suspect, Quinn Condemns Attack

101309suspectvictim.jpg Police have identified the second suspect in the savage beating of an openly gay Queens man who is still in grave condition after the Friday morning attack. On Sunday police arrested 26-year-old Daniel Aleman and charged him with assault and aggravated assault as a hate crime; they say the second assailant is Daniel Rodriguez, 21, of College Point, Queens. The victim, 49-year-old Jack Price, was leaving a 24-hour deli in College Point around 3 a.m. Friday when he was attacked by two men who allegedly screamed anti-gay slurs during the assault. He's in a medically-induced coma.

Price's family is holding a vigil by his bedside; his sister-in-law Joanne Guarneri tells WABC, "Both his lungs are collapsed. All his ribs are broken, his spleen had surgery, and he had to get a metal plate put in his jaw. This man would not hurt a soul. He's five foot six and 130 pounds." Price managed to walk and crawl more than 10 blocks to his home after the attack so he could call 911, NY1 reports. And before doctors put him in a coma, he managed to pick out photos of the perps.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who is openly gay, denounced the attack yesterday: "You grow tired of doing these press conferences...these two hateful, ignorant individuals represent a minority of New Yorkers. I want to send a clear message to that second individual who is still on the loose. Turn yourself in because the full force of the NYPD will be brought to bear to apprehend you." Police are asking anyone with information to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.

Disgusting. I hope this guy pulls through and that they catch the other attacker.

So very sad. I hope these scumbags are prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Awful, awful, awful.

I hope he gets better.

I hope they get the right guys, and when they do, they are locked up forever.

Has the hate crime law gone into effect yet? If so, this would be an appropriate instance to use it.

Damn, you have to be pretty thorough to break every single rib.

that's what scares me most.. that is just so brutal. i just can't understand wanting to hurt somebody that badly. these guys are disgusting.

the perp has a caesar haircut, a goatee, and pouty lips and he's going after gay dudes? He's probably projecting all his gay feelings about himself but if he looked in the mirror he'd really hate himself. Oh well, I guess he'll have plenty of time to get with his sensitive side in jail.

"These two hateful, ignorant individuals represent a minority of New Yorkers."

Strong words - about goddamn time. I hope two enjoy becoming exactly what they despise in prison.

This story makes me sick to my stomach. Find the other gutless puke and beat them into a fucking coma...

Horrific and unbelievable. I see this as attempted murder considering the injuries. You don't break every rib, collapse both lungs, and beat someone on the head until their jaw breaks without meaning fatal harm.

My only concern is that in his physical and mental state, was the victim accurately able to identify his assailants? This case can get even uglier if innocents are convicted while the guilty remain free.

Clearly they identified suspects while the victim is still in a coma, so they have more to go on than just what he saw. Dunno if it's CCTV footage or other witnesses, but I think they'll have enough to put these guys away for a long time.

It's always amusing that these gay attackers do it with a boyfriend or two. By himself, this perp seems barely capable of lifting a teacup.

There was a 9 Chickweed Lane comic strip a few years ago with the punchline that the homophobes making fun of the openly gay ballet dancer were three guys who were hanging out together presumably because they couldn't get any girls. Seems that stupidity multiplies in the presence of peer pressure and the "need" to prove how manly one is. Get thee to a brothel, guys!

Funny, I could have helped with the description here. I knew have was going top look like that. I'm usually right.

this is a horrible story, so is the concept of 'hate crimes'. one law, no thought police, free speech - you know the basic underpinnings of our democracy.

uhhh yeah hate crime laws are bad for democracy...

The part that haunts me is that after getting the crap beat out of him, the guy hauls himself home. Can you imagine the agony, physically and emotionally, and not knowing if they're coming back for you or if you'll make it home at all? Nightmare shizz.

The press keeps writing that the victim had in-laws. I didn't know our state's laws allowed gay marriage.

If his brother is married, then his brother's wife would be his sister-in-law, you fucking moron

What a shame, I hope Jack Price gets well soon. Live & let live people!! When they catch the 2nd piece of shit I hope both get it up the ass in prison that would be good karma, now wouldn't it:)

mmmmm-mmm-mmm
I wonder what those two will get in prison...
mmmmmm...pick up that soap.

The total pervasiveness of homophobia, like metastasizing cancer, is evident here in these otherwise completely sympathetic posts.

Note how even the violent criminals are tortured in rather brutal, sexualized manner--& we're tortured with the same phobic dropping-of-the-soap jokes, a truly oafish faux-masculinist "eye-for-an-eye" sensibility of justice. Call me, Butch! LOL.

But seriously, the crime truly abhorrent because in our culture we've designated that it's actually better to commit a totally random crime, a crime of passion, or one based in some twisted logic of personal gain or profit, than one based on a fundamental refusal or rejection of the very identity of the person attacked. It's like a war crime, only personal.

The punishment should be proportional, not to the crime, but to the risk/reward with this type of criminal and the likelihood of any possible recidivism.

Reached for comment from prison, Daniel Aleman said, "I don't like it in prison. It's fun to stay at the WMCA"

The fact that the cops had photos of the attackers to show to the victim implies that those two losers were already known as troublemakers.

They got the second one of these coward animals.

Good job!

Enjoy the next decade in prison cowards. The video on NY1 is disgusting. Based on the "Fat Nick" caper, these animals will be gone a long time.
