Last Night's Action: Jets Not Wild About Wildcat

  • Dolphins 31, Jets 27: The lead changed five times in the fourth quarter, but the last score -- a two-yard run by Miami's Ronnie Brown with 10 seconds to go-- proved the difference. Rex Ryan's defense couldn't contain the Dolphins' wildcat formation, which gained 110 yards. If not for two fake punts in the first-half, the Jets could have been in deeper trouble. Braylon Edwards, making his Jets debut, scored a touchdown and set up two others. The savior Mark Sanchez was 12 of 24 for 172 yards and a touchdown. The Jets' defense, which was beaten all game, deserves the bulk of the blame for this one.
  • Rangers 7, Maple Leafs 2: Dan Girardi and Sean Avery had two goals apiece in a Rangers rout. The Blueshirts haven't lost since their season-opening defeat at the hands of the Penguins. The Rangers got four goals in the final period to run away. Don't forget how quickly they started last season before cooling off.
  • Devils 3, Capitals 2: Martin Brodeur made two stops in the shotout, including one against Alexander Ovechkin, to help the Devils squeak by Washington. Brian Rolston and David Clarkson scored to help overcome a 2-0 lead in regulation.
  • Kings 2, Islanders 1: A red-hot Kings team proved too tough for Martin Biron and the Islanders, who didn't score in the game's first 58 minutes. The Islanders (0-3-1) are still looking for their first win this season. This wasn't as bad as the three-goal lead they blew Saturday in Boston, but it wasn't good either.

Last year, Tom Renney was the coach. That says it all. Look at their conditioning and power play under Torts. It's a much better team, with contributions coming from everyone. Eight players had two points last night (granted the Leafs are pretty bad).

The Rangers are good. Real good.
