NYPD Has New Name for Hipsters

phpjApkYbAM.jpg Unsubstantiated! However, one Twitterer recently twote that she "Just found out cops in Williamsburg call hipsters marshmallows because we are white and soft." Whether or not this is true, we would like to recommend that everyone use "marshmallow" going forward — it is much less amorphous than the H word.

Why was this posted even? Twitter is now a source for news?

I'm still trying to wrap my head over the fact that there's a word like "twote," not to mention "tweeted." I hope I use it in a grammatically correct way the next time I have to describe marshmallows in Bill-burg.

HINT: when you have to add the disclaimer "unsubstantiated!" before you enter the rest of your content into a newsblog that you work for, it's probably not worth posting.

btw nice attempt at yellow journalism with that headline there, as if the entirety of the NYPD goes by this "code" or whatever, even if the rest of it is true.

You, Steven and redhookreject have got it correct.

Why doesn't Jen just set up a site called "Williamsburgist" since that is all that seems to matter?

for real though, click the "williamsburg" tag on the article and take a look at how many recent williamsburg-centric articles are written by jen carlson. what's more of a concern for me is the way that she regularly reports on the rest of the city from what i read as williamsburg's POV, i.e. as if other neighborhoods are these quaint little commodities for white people to enjoy.

who is this site for, anyway?

LMAO... I like it.... marshmallows......

Lets use it is a sentence. Jen Carlson is a marshmallow.

Go ride your "fixie" back to bushwick.

Pffft. I've been calling them "Hostess Twinkie Motherfuckers" for years now.

Urban Dictionary has far more colorful synonyms:

indie emo scenester scene hip poser cool trendy hipsters punk music hippie pretentious williamsburg goth douchebag fashion gay yuppie irony loser starbucks coffee wannabe fake douche fixie myspace bohemian pbr poseur urban outfitters nerd fag prep indie kid ironic fixed gear lame american apparel rock urban scene kid geek elitist hippy ipod brooklyn liberal indie rock

no country for old men

apt description but "marshmallows" will never catch on. too many syllables, too little time.

hmmm, what else is white and soft and easy to say?

Smores. White, soft, and always baked.

the problem is smores are tasty.

how about 'maggots?' rhymes with....

Um, I think it's just backwards. Marshmallow is the new hipster nickname for cops.

Just look how upset all you little Marshmallows are getting! You should be happy that the police are so whimsical, I've always used the term "entitled assholes." "Marshmallow" is a nice compromise.

And black hipsters are Smores.

This is funny. Stop getting so whiny about it gothamist commenters. Or gothmenters. The goth describes both gothamist and the dramatic part.

I see what you did there with your gothment.

and doesn't "driftwood" describe a boner that can't find something to fuck? draws parallels to your contribution to this conversation.

Eh, I wasn't referring to that with the name.

Your whining about something an amusing NY anecdote as being not journalistic worthy on a blog was really great too.

this is old news if your not white
i guess when you discover a slang derrogative term used to describe your soft your people are you find it endearing, write a twitter post and it gets picked up as news.

sober up a bit and try that sentence again.

Sober up and click on REPLY when you're replying to someone.

everyone knows you can't put that in a washing machine

why the fancy monikers? those of us down in the southern parts of BK have been calling them douchebags for years... seems to work just fine.

The tipster got it wrong. "Marshmallow" refers to anyone who is "white and soft." Sure, it can be applied to some hipsters but it also can be applied to a significant segment of the non-hipster population. And a significant number of Gothamist commenters, I'm sure.

Is there a name for people with dark skin who wear skinny jeans and live in Williamsburg? Like if they are from the Caribbean Europe or Afrcia, not from American

wow, this board is so diverse and educated.

Those are the marshmallows just sell out.
;)

like most cops are not white and soft?

So black hipsters are roasted marshmallows?

it doesnt refer to being soft like 90lb weakling.
it refers to being so soft you call 911 for every little inconvenienence and discourtesy you encounter even if its not a crime. it referes to the retarded need to film and stand there and document every single argument and discord that appears in front of of your hoping to get some twatter and utube fame. it refers to the incessant need to blog tweet face and space every single event in your boring lives as if its really important.

yes cops do some good work, some cops are assholes.
most cops are asshole who havent been discovered yet.

cops dont deal with hard core white people who hold it down in the hood, they deal with pretenious twats who overwhelm the 911 system with dumb silly calls.

+1

Gothamist seems big on racially profiling people. Unless they're Muslim terrorists, of course.

Seems like many are complaining about Gothamist articles about Williamsburg, but is anyone really forcing you to read them? Who cares?
