Would you look at that—NYC Transit will be rolling out (in a pilot program) luggage racks on buses that go to JFK and LaGuardia Airports. According to the Daily News, "The racks, which replace several seats toward the back of the bus, debut Monday on the M60 route between Broadway and 125th St. and LaGuardia Airport. NYC Transit will have racks on 10 buses on seven routes in all that include stops at LaGuardia or Kennedy airports." The other routes are B15, Q3, Q10, Q33, Q48 and Q72, and one bus driver is already happy, noting that many customers complain about the luggage blocking the entrances, exits and aisles.

Um, the Daily News needs to get a bus map. The M60 doesn't run from 125th and Broadway. It starts at 106th and runs up Broadway to 120th, then goes over to Amsterdam, goes up to 125th and runs from there to the Triboro.
Why do I feel that, since they are in the back of the bus, most folks will choose not to walk that far? It's easier to just block the aisle or take up seats with the luggage.
Something similar happens like that on the Metro-North and LIRR. Passengers are suppose to put their luggage on the overhead racks, but sometimes they put it next to their seat or on another seat.
People aren't going to want to sit far from their luggage, so I don't see how one rack in the back (up the dreaded steps) will help.
Folks should take note, however: the Q33, Q48, and Q72 all go to LaGuardia from various subways as well (and the Q47 goes to the Marine Air Terminal) so there are other options to dealing with the M60, which has become ridiculous. On Friday, with the Yankees game, the M60 took almost 2 hours. I will never understand why people will risk missing their flight instead of just budgeting the $35 cab fare into their trip expenses. Take the bus on the way back home, when you're not on a schedule.
Or take the E train to Queens and transfer to the bus.
Aren't those seats in the back of the bus that they're replacing the ones where the cockroaches live? What a nice souvenir for tourists to take home in their luggage.
Still think this is a great idea. I only take the bus when I have one small carry-on bag; I'm always stunned by the inconsiderate fools who try to lug two large suitcases on board and expect everyone to try to maneuver around them. If you have that much luggage and not enough money to take a cab, there's always the buses that take you to Port Authority, Grand Central and Penn Station for less than $20. And oh yeah -- you can put your luggage in the hold under the bus.
