Thompson Crows About Obama "Endorsement," Media Skeptical

2009_10_thomep.jpg Yesterday, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs confirmed that President Obama would "support the Democratic nominee" in the NYC mayoral race—which would be City Comptroller Bill Thompson. But Gibbs never mentioned Thompson by name and actually praised Mayor Bloomberg by name, adding that Obama "obviously has a tremendous amount of respect for what he's done as well." Which is why the media's take on Obama's "endorsement" ranges from "most lukewarm and indirect" (the Times) and "as muted as they come" (Daily News) to "odd little bit of political theater" (Post) and "lukewarm" (Reuters) again.

Thompson's campaign held a last-minute press conference for the candidate to discuss the endorsement. The Times notes, "Most campaigns notify the news media well in advance and stage elaborate ceremonies, with well-rehearsed speeches in which the candidate and the endorser stand hip to hip.But in this case, no one from the White House had even contacted Mr. Thompson beforehand, catching him off guard." And PolitickerNY's Azi Paybarah, who has video of the Thompson press conference, points out the news media was a little more skeptical about the endorsement:

“In the statement from the White House,” said one television reporter, “he actually showed confidence in Mayor Bloomberg, didn’t say anything about you other than you’re a Democrat and so is he.”

“Will he appear with you?” asked another reporter.

“But were you surprised that the press secretary didn’t mention your name?”

“Do you expect that we’re going to hear the words ‘I endorse Bill Thompson’ coming out of Barack Obama’s mouth,” asked a newspaper reporter.

“I think,” said Thompson, “you will definitely hear those words come out of the president’s mouth.”

As for Bloomberg, he said, "Well, look, I'm not surprised the president supported the nominee of the party."

again, it was the media who asked Gibbs the question regarding the NYC mayoral race. so how'd about the media STFU and ask pertinent questions and not who lady gaga is?

Pretty big win for Thompson. Now on every ad he can say that he was endorsed by Obama, maybe winning over a few more people.

funny how the bloomberg campaign tried to find the meanest photo of thompson and got bupkus. whereas the mayor moneybags carpetbagger......
can't wait till the debate. all ones need to do is get under his skin and we've seen some brave people do it during his press conferences. deBlasio and gioia did and what about the disabled guy in the wheelchair who had difficulty bending down to pick up his cell phone.

Joke:
A rabbi is new to the congregation. During his first week, a congregant dies. He is asked to conduct the service but he never knew the guy. He asks the mourners if someone would come up and tell us of the good things the man had done. Nobody comes up, he asks again and still nobody. The Rabbi then says that can't imagine that no one had a good word for the deceased. Finally, from the rear of the chapel a voice says "His brother was worse".

That was as good as the so called endorsement.

Either of these guys would do just fine by the elites, and that's the whole point of "elections," really. It's like FDR vs. Wilkie writ small.

Thompson just got the Swedish Acadamy vote.
