Yesterday's fair amount of chaos across the city, from power outages to downed trees, from toppled Sukkot structures to bricks falling off buildings and the city closing down streets to deal with them. Some other stats and stories:

  • Over 35,000 businesses and residences lost power in NYC and Long Island.
  • NYC Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe said that field workers confirmed at least 11 trees fell on houses. The Times adds, "There were reports of toppled trees in the Briarwood, South Jamaica and Rockaway neighborhoods in Queens, as well as in the Williamsburg and Gravesend sections of Brooklyn."
  • And in Queens, Daily News reporter Joe Kemp got an exclusive—because his car was battered by a tree branch. "My car is gone forever. My insurance company did agree to cut a check for whatever a '98 Sentra with more than 140,000 miles might be worth - making this the most expensive story I've ever written."
On the upside, the wind appeared not to hinder the Yankees' performance.

    Bloomberg plans to outlaw wind.

call 311 to report wind and bloombergs toadies carrying cheap umbrellas will come over to investigate, faster response times in tribeca and soho.

call 911 if the wind threat is imminent, NYPD anti-wind teams are on the ready 24 hours a day (below 14th street)

about 96th street an uptick in wind crimes are only documented after 3 days, 3 deaths, whichever comes first or if bloomberg is campaigning nearby.

Love that Joe Kemp story--too bad for him, but the last line is worth savoring.

That is what you get when you splurge on plastic planter pots. We're going to have to pay more for that cleanup (at least 30 overtime man-hours each pot) than it would have cost to put real planter pots there.

    Thanks!
