Parents Hate H1N1 Vaccines, New York May Have Immunity Anyway

100809swineflu.jpg Drama! Even though the city is urging parents to get their children vaccinated against H1N1, a national survey found out that only 34% would give their children the shot, the rest preferring their children become infected with delicious, porcine goodness. "It’s just too new on the market, and we don’t know what side effects it may have on children," one parent told the Daily News. These concerns still come after Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius insisted that the H1N1 vaccine is perfectly safe, and that the "adverse effects are minimal compared to what can happen when you get the flu" (seriously—swine flu seems TERRIBLE).

However, New Yorkers may have reason to rejoice. More recent studies show that places that suffered a swine flu epidemic this spring have shown little sign of resurgence. New York City health officials believe that a good percentage of New Yorkers may have been exposed in the spring, and have since developed an immunity that has kept the disease from spreading. "We’re seeing essentially no disease transmitted in the city," NYC Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas A. Farley told a conference last Friday.

But if you're still worried and don't feel like venturing into the scary world of medicine, Queens restaurant London Lennie's is offering swine flu "shots," with gazpacho, tequila and oysters, which are apparently packed with immune supporting vitamins like zinc and selenium. Whatever you do, just stay away from the Backstreet Boys.

Too "new on the market?" It's a FLU shot, that's all. Flu shots have been around forever and are safe.

"the rest preferring their children become infected with delicious, porcine goodness"?
Um, Not so much.

While I think the vaccine is safe, some parents are concerned that the testing was too rushed and some don't want their kids put in potential danger as a result.

To make life more entertaining: Lots of media darlings have been saying "Vaccines is a cause of AUTISM!!!!!" (from what I've read, is not the case)which scares the crap out of parents too.

It's a tough issue for some parents and your comment is, IMO, not helping.

Having a valid concern is one thing.. having a concern because you are suddenly an expert on the development of vaccines after watching 10 minutes of CNN is quite another.

Anyone that believes everything the goverment tells them is just begging to be bent over and violated with no lubricant.

Too much government telling people what they can or cannot do.

As in, you CAN get a flu shot for H1N1 or you CANNOT?

What the hell are you talking about?

GEEEZUS.

ALL flu shots are "new". Every freakin year the flu shot is different than the previous year.

This vaccine hysteria is ridiculous.

Agreed! And it's only socially responsible to get the flu shot; even if the flu only causes you moderate discomfort, the real danger is that you are a carrier to those around you who may have a more serious reaction.

In general, anti-vaccination people drive me crazy because they consider their personal convictions more important than the health and safety of others around them.

What about healthy individuals who forgo the vaccine so that others who may be less healthy or who may have said adverse reaction can get the vaccine first/at all? There are not 300+ million doses of the vaccine for H1N1 or the regular flu shot.

it's only socially responsible to get the flu shot

I'm glad someone brought this up. Most people don't understand that vaccines are not just about protecting the individual. The real goal is to provide immunity to the herd - and this can be accomplished with less than 100 percent vaccination. It makes more sense to vaccinate people who are likely to pick up a disease and spread it because they come in close contact with lots of other people e.g. school kids, medical professionals, college kids in dorms, soldiers in barracks, etc. Vaccinating the elderly against seasonal flu might seem smart since as a group they have a higher mortality rate but it would be better overall to vaccinate those more likely to spread the disease.

Well then, this is even better:

An alternative to the vaccine and it is known for a certainty to work (100%) and also no real risk - safe for everyone and anyone to use and the best remedy.

The government and the Pharmaceutical companies say the sky is falling just like it DID during the Buebonic plague. Of course, it did fall, except on the rich.

http://www.bloglines.com/blog/holdingtrue

lol. That's all complete garbage. Including the bunk about the plague. Every word of that is crap. It's somewhat terrifying.

because the government told you so . . .

These same parents will line up to sue the schools and anyone else if their kids succumb.

People are smartening up to the CDC. The US government is America's the biggest snakeoil salesman/drug pusher. They stand to make a lot of money by pushing swine flu fear and hysteria unto the masses and scaring everybody into getting vaccinated.

Getting vaccinated for every single imaginary epidemic and/or disease is precisely why so many people's immune systems are weakened and why so many children have allergies, autism, and a host of other problems that emerged a little over a generation ago.

I've never gotten sick during the cold season but a few years ago I decided to get the regular flu shot just because it seemed the right thing to do. Big mistake. I ended up getting the flu-bronchitis the following year! The vaccine actually made me more vulnerable to getting the flu.

Now that I'm back in good health, there is absolutely no good reason for me to get any kind of flu shot, let alone the untested swine flu vaccine, and especially if the Obama Care gov't is telling me "It's good for you!" Bullshit it is.

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about here. AT all.

Getting the flu shot one year will not make any difference the next year. Every single year the flu shot is different, because every single year the flu is different. Besides that, you're ONE person, and not a population. Because you got the flu once pretty much means nothing to the overall effectiveness of the vaccine anyway.

Vaccinations have not caused people's immune systems to be weakened. Where the hell are you getting that from? Do you have any idea what a vaccine actually does?

You can get vaccinated for free, the swine flu vaccine has been tested, it's been 100 percent disproven that vaccines have anything to do with autism, there's no reason at all to believe that a flu vaccine would make you more susceptible to the flu months later (it can sometimes make you feel a bit crappy for a few days after you get it), and it's a good thing people like you weren't paid attention to when the campaign to wipe out smallpox was being contemplated. You're batting .000. Or 1.000.

Correlation does not imply causation, dummy.

The personal biases and opinions of the Gothamist "reporter" are not wanted nor needed here, thanks.

Because this vaccine was rushed, with very little testing done, it stands to reason that most intelligent parents don't necessarily believe everything the gov't tells them nor do they want their children to become the CDC's guinea pigs.

I believe the folks at Gothamist are "bloggers".

Yeah the vaccine was slightly rushed, because the flu was killing the shit out of people. Rushed in this sense ONLY in production. Flu shots have been tested over the last few DECADES. The only thing about this vaccine that is different than every seasonal flu vaccine is the strain within it.

The amount of misinformation about vaccines is freakin maddening. I could kick Jenny McCarthy in the teeth right now.

Yeah the vaccine was slightly rushed, because the flu was killing the shit out of people.
"Killing the shit out of people"? Alarmist much? Swine flu has killed only 36 children so far and two-thirds of those had at least one severe underlying illness or disability. You're more likely to die septicemia than swine flu. This is hardly a pandemic.
The amount of misinformation about vaccines is freakin maddening. I could kick Jenny McCarthy in the teeth right now.
Unlike you, I don't get my health information from Entertainment Tonight.

Hahahaha who's alarmist here? I was quite obviously exaggerating when I said "killing the shit out of people". Gimme a break.

And the crack about Jenny McCarthy is related to her insane crusade against vaccines which, believe it or not, is brought up outside the realm of entertainment television. Within the rational, science-based news a culture communities she's often brought up because her specific breed of misinformation is so potent. Obviously it's not just her. It was a joke (although I wouldn't mind word with her). BTW http://www.jennymccarthybodycount.com/Jenny_McCarthy_Body_Count/Home.html

And you're still wrong about everything.

Unlike you, I don't get my health information from Entertainment Tonight.

Since you don't believe the CDC where exactly are YOU getting your information?

Much junk science and tinfoil hattery here.

It's unclear why you believe so strongly it was 'rushed'. It stands to reason you're making an assumption without much to corroborate it. That reeks of an emotional response, and not one of rational intelligence.

Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS)

GBS is hardly a threat. It's crazy rare. Like one in a million rare, literally. And even then, is only fatal when left untreated.

Never had a flu shot, never had the flu. Not sure if there is a correlation there...

No correlation. Either you have never been exposed to the flu, or you have a robust enough immune system to have deflected infection. Absolutely nothing to do with whether or not you have ever had a flu vaccine. I have never gotten a yellow fever vaccine. I have never had yellow fever. Those are independent statements with nothing to do with each other, because I have never been exposed to the yellow fever virus.

"only 34% would give their children the shot, the rest preferring their children become infected with delicious, porcine goodness."
It's obvious the jackass who wrote this doesn't have kids of her own.
