The mother of a 6-year-old Queens boy is outraged at police for what she's calling a slow response time to her son's disappearance yesterday. Shortly before 3 p.m., the boy was in the courtyard at P.S. 80 at dismissal time and managed to walk through the gate without anyone stopping him. He wandered Jamaica, traveling four miles from the school before finally being located at his father's Rockaway Boulevard office—two hours after he was found missing. And that's also when police finally showed up!
The boy's mother, Trina Bascom, is furious; she says she called 911 immediately, but nothing was done to find her son. After frantically searching the area around the school with no success or help from the police, Bascom and another relative, Bernard Lewis, went to the 113th Precinct. According to Lewis, an officer there said, "It's not like it's not a priority, but we get a lot of cases here."
A police spokesman tells ABC that they were responding to a number of other emergencies at the time, including an assault, but they are investigating why the call wasn't responded to "in a more timely manner." And this is hardly the first case of boyhood wanderlust; in April a 5-year-old slipped away from his mother on a sidewalk in Marble Hill in northern Manhattan and rode the subway all the way to South Ferry!

Ohhhh, i smell a frivolous lawsuit!
I'd be furious too. At my inability to take care of my own children. Stupid police should do that for me, I pay taxes!
Your mental capacity seems to be low. The boy wandered from school, not his home. Parents should have a perfectly valid expectation that their children are being looked-after at school.
Thank you. I was just about to say that.
That shouldn't stop his parents from giving him an ass whoopin. Now where's my belt...
Well, I think it is legitimate to wonder why the DOE let the kid wander out by himself.
Chief Quimby in charge of the search party?
And it goes w/out saying that if a white boy from an UES school went missing for hours, not only would there be a massive police response, but it would be on Nancy Grace and Fox News in minutes, complete w/ talking heads and useless conjecture.
the kid was bored and decided Dad-time was more important than school that day.
And that race-baiters like you would insinuate an entire circle of events in a heartbeat. Wait, you just did.
Oh please, missing white girl syndrome is quite well documented. Stop playing like you live under a fucking rock.
He was missing for TWO HOURS.
little man wanted to go visit dad at work - that's kind of nice.
So Mom is mad at the school, the police, the 911 system.
But NOT her son...
With a mom like that, the kid is going to grow up to be a big pussy...
a big pussy w/a lot of money cause his mom will be suing everyone she can for everything HE does WRONG
Obviously he's not a pussy if he walked four miles by himself at the age of six, jackass.
The kid must have tons of energy in him. Walking 4 miles???
yeah 4 miles all by his lonesome. Most 6 year olds can walk a mile tops...then the whining starts
i'm just amazed that the 6 year old knew his way around and had the sense of direction to walk 4 miles to his dad's office...
Every day, all kinds of kids on all kinds of little "field trips". Even if mom calls upset, by that time Junior's long gone. Chalk it up to curiosity and wanderlust...kid could grow up to be something.
